About the Author
A graduate of Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, Ian Stewart has reported from more than 40 countries. At the age of twenty-seven, he was appointed bureau chief of UPI's South Asia bureau. He later joined the Associated Press and was named bureau chief of its West Africa bureau in 1998. Good But Loose

The puzzles/questions in the book are challenging but several times the author is too vague in his description and leaves the reader wondering what exactly the author is asking. Thus, the reader is left with several ways to interpret the puzzle/question. However, it is fun and I would still recommend it to help with critical thinking skills and nurturing creative thinking/ideas.

Another puzzlebook Classic!!

I purchased this book a short time ago and am slowly getting into it. It is sure to become one of the great puzzle books. I have been interested in puzzles for many years and have a collection of over 350 "puzzle books" I have no hesitation in ranking this book right up there with "Cyclopedia of Puzzles" by Sam Loyd, "The Moscow Puzzles" by Boris Kordemsky" and "536 Puzzles & Curious Problems" by H.E.Dudeney. Each in it's own way; Loyd's was an innovation and a classic in it's time,Dudeney's and Kordemsky's were very traditional with great variety. Moscovich gives us a whole new approach in types of puzzles and a huge leap in the incorporation of art and graphics into the world of puzzles. The greatest puzzle of all to me is how this book could be produced and sold in the price range of a novel with no artwork,color or illustrations. On behalf of puzzle enthusiasts everywhere I would like to commend the author and publishers. Anyone who likes puzzles will love this book.

Riddled with errors

As I dipped into this book I became more and more annoyed. It has many, many mistakes, of all kinds, in it. Even in presenting well-known puzzles the author manages to make serious errors. Here are a few of the mistakes that I noticed:
(Puzzle 307) Morley's theorem is (to quote the late H.S.M. Coxeter) "one on the most surprising theorems in elementary geometry", but Moscovich manages to get the diagram wrong! The triangle which he picks out does not even look equilateral!
(Puzzle 772) For the well-known puzzle of passing a cube through a smaller cube the author begins his explanation: "If you hold a cube so that one corner points directly toward you, its edges outline a hexagon. It then becomes obvious that the cube has ample space for a square hole slightly larger than one of its faces." There is even a picture of a hexagon with a square superimposed on it. Although a cube can be passed through a (slightly) smaller cube in this way, it is well known that the optimum solution does not have the edges of the hole parallel to the space diagonal of the cube.
(Puzzle 990) Weighing from 1 to 40 grams using weights on one side of a balance only. Moscovich says "you must have the weights 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 grams". Not so. For example, 1, 2, 4, 8, 9 and 16 would be ok.
I began to compile a list of errors in this book, but I gave up when I had accumulated over 30, having read, I would estimate, about a quarter of the book.

In this new book by Van Allsburg, twice a winner of the Caldecott Medal, the theme of an outsider's point-of-view (touched upon most recently in his The Stranger ) is expanded. Accustomed to the orderly and uneventful life in the ant hole, all the ants enter the bizarre world of a kitchen in the search for sugar crystals for the queen. Two greedy ants stay behind in the sugar bowl, eating their fill and then falling asleep. Their slumbers end when a giant scoop drops them into a sea of boiling brown coffee. Further mishaps include a heated stay in the toaster, a hazardous swirl in the garbage disposal and a zap in an electrical outlet. When the ant troops return, the two bad ants gladly rejoin their friends and head for the safety of home. In this work, the hazards of nonconformity are clear. The narration has the feel of early newsreels where the broadcaster described unknown phenomena in clipped, clinical language: "A strange force passed through the wet ants. They were stunned senseless and blown out of the holes like bullets from a gun." The resilient ants and the eerie landscapes are portrayed in strong black-and-white images, enriched by deep brown, purple, slate, gold and steely blue colors; Van Allsburg, playing with perspective, creates marvelous contrasts and images. But although Two Bad Ants is visually different from its predecessors, it shares the same strong style, dazzling artwork and whimsy that characterizes all of the artist's work. Ages 3-8.

Grade 1-5 In this brief tale of the adventures of two runaway ants, Van Allsburg once again gives children a visual puzzle to solvein this case identifying common household appliances from an ant's point of view. When a troop of ants are sent to retrieve sugar crystals from a kitchen, two ants stay behind to feast and go to sleep in the sugar bowl. When morning comes they are successively stirred into a cup of coffee, almost swallowed, toasted with an english muffin, whirled through a garbage disposal, and stunned senseless in an electrical outlet. While some children will enjoy identifying the highly magnified objects, others will wonder how the ants have managed to survive any one of these disasters. The truants return home in one piece, and the last few lines supply a pallid and oddly moralistic conclusion to the story. The book is a visual tour-de-force. The highly linear, hard-edged drawings look like fine etchings which have been magnifieda technique which enhances the sense of being reduced to ant size. The colors applied in flat fields are primarily limited to earth tones and gray, combined with touches of pure white and black in lines and fields of almost luminous intensity. The intensity of the visual experience overpowers the story, which is a flat, rather cold vehicle, an excuse for a visual game which will appeal to the intellect of children older than typical picture book readers. Perfect.

My great nephew is 7 years old and his class at school has a secret reader which is a students relative. I knew a few months ahead of time I would be the secret reader for April 11, 2013. I search on line for a great book and the title of the book caught my eye. I read the other reviews and it sounded perfect for his 1st grade class.

It was a hit the children in his class were very tentative with every word I read they loved the book from cover to cover. It was just perfect. It made my day that they were so pleased and my
great nephew just loved it. He was squarming in his seat with excitement waiting to see what was going to happen to the Two Bad Ants.

Striking artwork, captivating story

First, the organization that shipped is top-notch--timely, everything in great condition.
Second, I pull this book out whenever ants appear in our classroom, once or twice a year. It's a good reminder to clean up after ourselves carefully (not just because an adult requested!). This book also offers a lovely way to consider perspective. Children spontaneously suggested what they thought the moral of the story might be, even though a moral is not emphasized in the book. It's a favorite... children love to hear it more than once.

About the Author
Laurie Abraham is a freelance writer and senior editor of Elle magazine and the author of Mama Might Be Better Off Dead: The Failure of Health Care in Urban America (University of Chicago Press). Formerly the executive editor of Elle, she’s written for New York Magazine, The New York Times Magazine, Mother Jones, and many other publications. Her work is also included in Best American Essays 2006, as well as the original collections The Bitch in the House (2001), Maybe Baby (2006), and The Secret Currency of Love (2008). Laurie has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in journalism from Northwestern University and a master’s in law from Yale University.

Six couples, a year in therapy, and a whole lotta theory

I thought this might be a juicy book about the hidden parts of marriages that are usually guarded closely by a couple until they decide to divorce. Then and only then do we find out the truth; the affairs, the incompatibilities, the deep resentments that chip away at a marriage are finally brought out in the open. But this book really isn't like that at all. It's a careful study of a group of couples with somewhat everyday troubles, and a detailed record of what it felt like to be in the room while they worked on those troubles. Between these chapters are long, informative chapters about therapeutic approaches, theories, practitioners, studies. I have a hunch that other readers might skim these parts, but I found the theory chapters much more interesting than the couples chapters. The author is passionately interested in this subject and brings a vast amount of knowledge and research to bear on her group.

The trouble for me is that the people being considered this minutely don't hold my attention. It goes like this: What the therapist said. What the husband said. What the therapist said. What the wife said. What someone else in the group said. Occasionally, the woman writing the book inserts what she thought or felt or said. The couples parts of the book are simply the back and forth of therapy. It is something like the first season of "In Treatment," without the masterfully crafted dialog. I thought the conflict between a determined career woman and her angry, less successful husband was sad, but a little easy to predict. The conflict between an emotionally manipulative woman who resented her husband to the point of seething, and her hapless husband who hid a huge void of sexual longing under a mountain of passive aggression, well, this couple got old really, really fast. In truth, the only couple in the book that interested me deeply had a happy marriage. I found their personal histories, what brought them in, and how they interacted to be profoundly interesting.

I guess the book, like the group, is a mixed thing. If you are in the process of sorting through your own marital situation or healing from a divorce, I have a feeling this book would speak to you more than it spoke to me, so please keep that in mind when considering my reaction.

Real Love

Laurie Abraham's book actually makes you THINK about your marriage and what it means to be close to someone, to love them, and to be their partner for a lifetime. So many other books about marriage give you prescriptions or list "10 Easy Tricks"--Abraham's book does not offer easy fixes, but that's what makes it so much more valuable. She follows five couples struggling with the normal things all married couples do--money, sex, power--and shows the bravery that goes into actually making your marriage work rather than escaping through divorce, cheating, or just being zoned out to life. I found the middle-aged couple who went from sexless and bitter to a new level of passion they'd never had before the most inspiring. It shows you that love, passion, and meaningful relationships are not just limited to young people in the first flush of a crush. I disagree with the reviews that say it had too much psychological theory. I enjoyed that part. The coupling of the theory with what was happening in the therapy group made me understand more clearly--and think more deeply about--what was going on. I thought Abraham did a good job of boiling down the messages of some of the the "big thinkers" on marriage--and also taking apart the quick-fix messages of some of the best-selling self help books. Her unmasking of John Gottman was particularly compelling. Generally, a very thoughtful look at marriage, love, life--and why it all matters!

Curious, Intelligent, and Humane

I loved this book. Abraham enters into the topic with curiosity and respect, and all of the participants are revealed in their complex vulnerabilities. The book is a fast, fascinating read, with lots of information about how couple's therapy can work (and work differently for different people). I was also extremely impressed by her thorough examination of the research -- particularly of John Gottman's work. I'd read so many positive things about it, but when Abraham looks closely at his methods, she reveals major flaws. That was a thrilling discovery. Thank you, Laurie Abraham, for your deep and engaging treatment of this topic.

Missing Pages

I bought this book for my son to use during his summer English course. We never noticed that there were missing pages (257-304) until I sold it on Amazon. The buyer had his first assignment on some of those missing pages and returned the book to me. There are no ripped out pages, it just appears that the book was made and sold with those missing pages. I contacted the publisher, Pearson, regarding this issue but they completely ignored me. I would not recommend buying this book until you secure from the seller that all pages are intact.

Had to buy for school, Want to Keep!

This is actually an amazing book in terms of ease of readability and helpfulness in improving writing style. Prior to reading this book, I had a vague (what I thought was thorough) understanding of the different styles of writing. I was raised by very artsy parents who were always enrolling me in writing classes in the hopes that they'd have a kid who was an author someday. Went the other way and became a scientist, and while I loved my years of creative writing, I lost some skill after writing for scientific research. This book gives the basics on how to cite and whatnot, but what I loved was the examples of various styles of writing and how they are broken down. I feel this would benefit people in any career track; creative writers, technical writers, doctors, lawyers, scientists, journalists, sociologists, etc. It's hard to know what skills you're lacking until you read a book that gives you a million new techniques to improve your writing style. It has a great chapter on analysis writing. Frankly, just reading the analysis chapter would benefit a lot of people in their ability to analyze media in general; ads, journals, newspapers, tv.. If you're a student and required to read this, don't hesitate to dig in and actually learn. If you're browsing books and considering this to improve your skills, I think you'll find this very comprehensive, straight forward, and helpful.
