The Failings of the UK NHS laid bare

This is an important analysis of the mismanagement of the UK NHS in the last twenty years. The UK NHS is both a good example and a dire warning to the rest of the world. It's a good example in that we achieve population coverage to some level. The dire warning bit is that the standards (of access, and outcomes achieved) are not as high as we like to think, or as good as in comparable European countries.

Imagine a car company that did not like its engineers. That's about the relationship between NHS management and the doctors and nurses who deliver the care to patients. Hunter clearly shows the problems that such an attitude causes and reminds us, ""As any change management text will state, the chances of ensuring that successful implementation occurs are seriously impaired if those working on the front line are not signed up to the changes and seek to contest, or undermine them.....A key feature of the most recent changes in the NHS in England is that the key professions have been disengaged from the reform process"

The UK NHS is a dire warning to others. It has consumed vast amounts of policy ideas and money, and delivered little in return for all the investment spent on it. The processes of change have been disruptive, faddy, and not sustained rather than constructive with long term outcomes in mind. Hunter describes the policies and their botched implementation carefully, and is clear about the consequences. The book is clearly written and well referenced, and so makes a strong case for its conclusions.

The tragedy is that all of us are suffering from this- doctors, patients, managers, voters, taxpayers, politicians.

Read this excellent book to find out where things have gone wrong in the NHS and why. And then make a note that centralized top down schemes which do not engage the workers will never succeed. No matter how much you paid the management consultants and special advisers to write them.

And if Americans are looking for a scheme to emulate then the UK NHS probably is not it.

About the Author

Lance Keimig has been photographing at night for nearly 30 years. He has taught night photography and light painting since 1998 at venues including the New England School of Photography, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Houston Center for Photography, Rayko Photo Center in San Francisco, and the School of Visual Art in New York. He teaches workshops around the country and leads night photography tours to places like Iceland, Scotland, Ireland, and Cuba. Keimig lectures at the Photo Plus Expo in New York, and was a featured speaker and workshop instructor at Estudio Brasil in Saõ Paulo, Brazil. Russell Brown, senior creative director at Adobe said that Keimig "may well be one of the finest photography instructors on the planet."

Comprehensive, well-written, and thoroughly enjoyable book

Well-written and informative, a worthy second edition that seems largely re-written. The history of night photography is still there, and still absolutely fascinating. The book covers astro-landscape, long exposures in moonlight, star trails, light painting, light drawing, and post-processing for night photography with an emphasis on Lightroom, although the tips for post-processing can obviously be done in Photoshop or other programs as well. Lance also includes other photographers and their images, their personalities and approaches adding to the book's vibrancy overall. The book, even more than the first edition, offers a comprehensive look at the many facets of night photography, managing to cover it in one book. And yes, of course, the photos are mesmerizing, beautiful, fascinating, and gorgeously executed. It includes lots of scenarios and technical information about night photography. And that's what we want, isn't it?

I am an experienced night sky, long exposure, Milky Way, light painting, and star trails photographer, and I nonetheless thoroughly enjoyed the book, picking up tidbits and philosophical approaches, and often affirming the good habits and approaches that I've done as well. And it's also feels great to know that other people feel the same way about night photography and how it offers a deeper connection into our surroundings.

I want to also add that it is the sign of a really good teacher to take something technical, something that has the potential to be slightly intimidating or overwhelming, and break it down so that it is useful and easy to understand, but not pedantic or dumbed down. Lance has achieved that here. And since he gives photography workshops, I would bank on those being thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile. This is a book in which I believe seasoned veterans of night photography and beginners alike can embrace and love.

Take your night photography to the next level.

Very good, very well written book. Probably not written for the seasoned night photographer as I didn't really learn anything new, it contained a lot of clear and concise information and really affirmed a lot of what I already do. Highly recommend to anyone who has already begun night photography but wants to take it to the next level and gain a deeper understanding into night photography and all the variables that come into play. Includes a lot of scenarios and examples with technical details about the shots. I've watched video after video on YouTube and read article after article on the Internet, gathered a slew of information from many different places and this book covers it all in one book. Just an all around good book, especially if you like a good technical read.

Night photographers, here is your bible!

Consider this the "New Testament" of the excellent first edition. Neither of these books are necessarily aimed at the beginner, but will definitely take the experienced photographer's work to the next level. It is the fine-tuning of the details that separates a great night photograph from a good one, and this book is all about the details. From choosing the right gear to studying the movements of the night sky to post processing techniques, no stone is left unturned. Also included are many example photographs from contemporary night photographers showing the many directions night photography can take and how it is limited only by one's imagination.

Beginners may find the technical explanations a bit overwhelming to grasp completely, but if you're already past that stage and have been wanting to elevate your night photography as far as you can, this is the only book you need.

Bone chilling!

This was more emotional than the first in the series. I can't even imagine what Ethan had to of gone through. This story is bone chilling and very freaky. Whenever "Lothar" would show up I would get freaky images of him in my head and goosebumps and my hair would stick up on the back of my next. I really wish Victoria wouldn't be into him so much, she should be asking Dr. Baggins ways of helping when Lothar appears. I was so thankful when Jeff came into Ethan's life, not so much with how it turned out. I really hope that something good happens, or something good happens with the story in the future, I want Ethan happy. After all he has been through since he was a child, he deserves this. He loves Victoria. I pray Lothar does not do anything to her when he "shows" her what happened to the other women. Sigh, Aphrodite you have done it again! Bone chilling and a must read series all!!!

Great series. A must read......I am anxiously awaiting the next book - however I cant find any info on when it will be released. This series has a unique story line, interesting characters, a nice mix of steamy mixed with an interesting story, etc. I was pleasantly surprised - I honestly did not expect to enjoy it so much - I saw it recommended on one of the reading blogs on facebook! There are a few grammatical errors but nothing major. The story was so good that this did not bother me!

Good manual for practitioners with a knowledge of Reiki

When I first started doing Reiki, this was one of the manuals that my teacher had included in her package of first degree attunement. Unfortunately, my teacher didn't give too much on the background of Reiki and when I decided to go into Reiki I really was depending on her for information. This book was fairly good, but not as informative as other manuals.
Mr. Rand does a fairly good job with descriptions of the power behind Reiki, but because of the whole "the symbols are secret" attitude, I feel that he skipped some information about Reiki to keep it traditional. Whereas I can understand the notion to honor the tradition of the privacy of Reiki it with the combination of the lack of information from my teacher left me with plenty of questions. I had to seek out other books to complete my curiosities.
However, it is not a bad book -- but very good with discovering the basics. I've read the reviews on his book and don't feel that they are really promoting his business, but he does have a clinic to support and since this is the manual that he distributes to his students, I can understand that he gives information on himself. (Please also note that I am not a student of William Rand.)
He has throroughly added to the manual with revised editions over the years and it has grown considerably larger with updated information of Dr. Usui and another path of Reiki considered the Eastern Tradition (whereas the typical four that most people learn to obtain the Reiki Master status, it seems that it really is only one level of eight.) He is very descriptive on hand positions, which can easily be forgotten after the first attunement and also gives diagrams.
Mr. Rand also gives information on how to contact him and where he can sell supplies. In my opinion, most people who read "help" books like to find out more about the author especially if they truly enjoy their books or have heard from others that they enjoyed his work firsthand. Considering this, I see no problem with relaying information regarding his classes or tools.
This book is good for Reiki practitioners who have knowledge of Reiki and want to read indepth on experiments with Reiki as well as a "how to" guide. Again, this is his manual for his classes. It is good for Masters to use for their students, especially if they have already given plenty of information on Reiki. A good bonus to already distributed information for students, but not the best.

A great Reiki book!

William Lee Rand has managed to write a Reiki book that is both spiritual and practical. His reference to the sourse of Reiki and the higher power, the need for compassion and it's relationship to healing helps us remember the real purpose of healing.
The fact that he has studied with so many different teachers from different lineages has given him a very broad understanding. You can sense the respect he has for all Reiki people and the fact that he promotes harmony in the Reiki community is very important to the health and well being of all of us involved with Reiki.
At the sametime, it is a very practical and down to earth Reiki book. He has done research in Japan and also taken classes from Japanese Reiki masters so that his Reiki information is based on facts and on original information from Japan, rather than second hand information that has wandered from the original intent of Reiki. He also includes all the hand positions for both self and others and important information on the Japanese Reiki Techniques that were taught by Dr. Usui and the Hayashi Healing Guide which are really necessary if one is to understand how Dr. Usui practiced Reiki. He has also provide very helpful information on developing your Reiki practice and becoming a Reiki master which I have found useful in getting my practice started. It also includes some of the best information on the Reiki symbols I have found.
This book is one of the clearest and easist to understand of all the Reiki books I have read. I truely feel that he comes from the heart and has done his best to create a very helpful and informative Reiki manual.

A Wealth of Information about Reiki

This book contains a very clear explanation of the hand positions and includes many useful and powerful Reiki techniques, including some of Usui's original techniques which were not passed down by Mrs. Hawayo Takata, who brought Reiki to this country. The inclusion of recent research on the real history of Reiki, as opposed to the mythology which apparently has been taught in American Reiki circles, helps to set the record straight and adds to the credibility of Reiki and the book. Unfortunately, the book does not contain pictures of the Reiki symbols, which however can be seen in Diane Stein's Reiki book and in Diane Shewmaker's book on Seichim. While the book becomes too aggressively commercial at times in the promotion of William Rand's Reiki center, the author has a real connection to the loving, powerful energy of Reiki, and the book is well worth buying.
