Dragons Are Our Friends!

Okay, so I started with this second novel and am now reading the first one.

Full disclosure: I've done proof reading for this author and a little on this novel, as well. The difficult aspect of proofing a novel, or any work, is that it takes away from a smooth flow while trying to read the novel. If you get all that, then please do continue!

My first impression is "Harry Potter, Look Out! You've got company coming!"

Cooper writes very differently for the Dragon series from his regular thriller series starring Cal and Daniel, and their band of retired military colleagues, who are working to keep this nation safe. Would that we really had such a group; we'd all be able to breathe more freely.

Back to Benjamin Dragon: This is a story of a young boy, 10 or 11 years old, who discovers that he has some talents that other kids don't have. This is a good news-bad news situation, and I'd be blowing it big time if I gave you any more than that; spoiler alert indeed.

From the beginning of this novel to the end - and there must be more coming - the characters are developing into a solid group of friends, who can help each other through some possibly dark times.

Give yourselves a break from the shoot-em-up military thrillers and enjoy what Monty Python called "... Something Completely Different!" You will be glad you did and, like me, I suspect you will be waiting for more.

Once again, Carlos Cooper has taken a break from the hard charging exploits of the Cal, Daniel, and the rest of the Corps Justice warriors to release his "inner 10-year-old boy". This book is a continuation of The Chronicles of Benjamin Dragon, the first book being The Awakening. The characters are quite believable and the continuing growth and maturation of Benjamin, as he assumes his place in the world, is fascinating. Although it is intended for the YA audience, I am sure it will be a hit with older readers as well. I believe the mark of a good author is how much he makes you care about the characters in his stories, as they face the consequences of their actions. This story will fire your imagination and make you remember those days when you "knew" anything was possible. In the interest of candor and full disclosure, I was a Beta reader for this book, but my review was in no way influenced by that fact. I love this book so much, I am buying copies for each of my grandchildren and I will use it in my English classes for adult GED students.

Mr. C.G.Cooper tells an exceptional story in Benjamin Dragon II. This novel offers engaging characters, and some of the author's most profound writing. I love the book. It has been a pleasure to observe Benjamin mature from the beginning of the series as he learns about his"gifts" and copes with finding his legacy in the scheme of the world. I am looking forward to Dragon III.
I did some editing for the series and am so impressed, I'm using it with my middle school classes. Trust me, the students are loving it. It is not only very entertaining, it is perfect for teaching literary skills. More importantly, the series inspires youths, as well as adults, to become stronger, accepting, and better people. I give the Benjamin Dragon Series my highest reccommendation.

But the big surprise comes as architects around the world rediscover the virtues of this durable, biodegradable, and environmentally sound material, sufficiently versatile to create unique works of architecture and to house thousands in disaster zones. It answers the needs of both high-tech aesthetics and low-tech aspirations for affordability and ease of construction, as demonstrated by such cutting-edge architects as Will Bruder and Lake/Flato Architects in the United States; Glenn Murcutt in Australia; Rem Koolhaas, Nicholas Grimshaw, and Foreign Office Architects in Europe; and Shuhei Endo in Japan. A History of an Invisible Building Material

An anonymous writer in 1833 called the public's attention to an architectural novelty that had appeared on the London docks: "Every observing person, on passing by it, cannot fail being struck... with its elegance and simplicity." What had brought this praise was the world's first building incorporating corrugated iron. One might think that the novelty of corrugated iron had surely led the writer into effusion about a subject otherwise unlikely to bring praise. And one might also think that a history of corrugated iron is one of the more unlikely subjects to be brought out in a colorful coffee-table book. There are many surprises in Corrugated Iron: Building on the Frontier (W. W. Norton & Company) by Adam Mornement and Simon Holloway, architectural historians who are enthusiasts for a material that provides shelter for millions and also is being used in upscale modern buildings with surprisingly beautiful effect. The authors say that corrugated iron has met diverse challenges of affordability, portability, utility, and strength, "but despite its many virtues, corrugated iron's contribution to society has rarely been acknowledged." Corrugated iron is everywhere, and because of this it has become invisible; this book is a handsome corrective to bring it back into view.

Corrugated iron was invented by Henry Robinson Palmer, Architect and Engineer to the London Dock Company, in 1829. He foresaw that the material could be used both as cladding upon an architectural framework and arched to make free-standing spans for roofing. Corrugated iron had advantages that innovative architects could use. The brilliant engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel adopted it early, and designed London's Paddington Station to be roofed in the material, with the corrugations running horizontally. There are no tie rods and no longitudinal beams between the rafters, because the corrugations in the roof provide tensile strength. Corrugated iron was used on lighthouses, whaling stations, and agricultural buildings. Prefabricated houses were designed with corrugated iron roofs and walls, and there are many illustrations here from catalogues from which people ordered such houses. Here also are pictures of the houses themselves, many of which are still being used. Most corrugated iron dwellings, however, were meant to be relatively temporary structures. Gold rushes in America, Australia, and South Africa proved to be workshops for such use, when living in tents was just too temporary a housing solution. There is a whole chapter here on churches made from corrugated iron, showing many of them of rural simplicity, but others with some Gothic splendor. Corrugated metal was not restricted to buildings; it was used to build boats, and the World War I Junker aircraft of Germany had wings of corrugated aluminum.

Corrugated iron will never escape completely its association with poverty. There are plenty of pictures here of shantytowns from all over the world, where corrugated iron is an architectural staple for improvised homes. There are other pictures of Nissan huts (the American version was the Quonset hut) used for wartime dwellings, and Buckminster Fuller used corrugated iron in a low-cost circular house called the Dymaxion Deployment Unit. The many pictures in the book's final chapter, though, show that corrugated metal has a place in the cladding of skyscrapers or in the homes of millionaires. Frank Gehry, for instance, has used it, and many of the modern buildings shown here are housed in huge loops or barrel forms of the material. It is used not only for its capacity to support and protect, but also as a sort of architectural sculpture. Many of the new and innovative buildings made from corrugated metal are from Australia, which has drawn on a tradition of using corrugated iron in the gold fields; there is no chance that these handsome, large houses of whimsical shape are going to be mistaken for shanties or for mobile homes. Corrugated iron is one of the most-used inventions humans have come up with, and paupers and tycoons are all taking advantage of it. Included are notes on key developments in the USSR successor states in Europe and in Asia, a discussion of the societal effects of post-socialist transitions from central planning to market economies, and commentaries on the changing emphasis from demographic aspects to reproductive and sexual health, postabortion psychological responses, and the activities of antiabortion-oriented religious organizations. To the extent available, statistical data tabulated include live birth, legally induced abortions, birth rates, legal abortion rates, legal abortion ratios, and total fertility rates. Excellent book on Paul's life and historical afterlife.

Though not primarily a scholar of early Christianity, over the years I've been impressed by Paul and by the scholars who've sought to disentangle him from his unhelpful "disciples"; such scholars include J.D. Crossan and Marcus Borg, associated with the Jesus Seminar circle and Robert Anderton-Kelly, influenced by the valuable anthropological ideas of Rene Girard. Armstrong belongs more with the former group than the Girardians. What I find especially useful in this book is her account of how the institutional heirs of Paul corrupted step by step the egalitarian thrust of Paul's original message exploiting, among other things, the latent conqueror frame that Paul himself employed in one of his authentic letters (his description of the Parousia of Christ). Bravo, Karen Armstrong!

Karen Armstrong a keen student of the Pauline corpus provides a concise and informative biography on the most famous apostle

Karen Armstrong, a former nun, is well known for her many books on religions and important religious figures from Jesus to Buddha to Muhammed. In this short book she examines the life and career of Paul. The book is well written, clearly stated and can be read with understanding by general readers.
Paul as born in Tarsus; converted on the Damascus Road and became a Christian missionary to the Gentile world. He traveled widely and wrote with profound wisdom and love. Among the places he visited in the Roman Empire were Thessalonica, Ephesus, Corinth, Athens Galatia and many other cities in the vast reaches of mighty Rome's imperial hegemony. Paul was not the woman hated which he has been accused of being by some theologians. Many of the false ideas about Paul come from pseudo-Pauline letters contained in the New Testament such as the letters to Timothy, and Titus. This is an excellent book which can be used with both laypersons and church professionals. Good work by a liberal scholar

Armstrong's Insights

I enjoy Armstrong's work even though she sometimes writes so as not to offend. I believe with St. Paul she establishes that the very earliest Christians looked to their religion to save them from the relentless, harsh, cruel times in which they lived. Paul walked and worked in these times, and as Armstrong explains he took it upon himself to help those less enlightened to make it through the night until Jesus returned. Unfortunately Jesus did not/has not returned, and those who came to power within the church saw fit to re-interprete Paul's teachings. Both to reflect the time and place they lived as well to gain power for themselves. That said I will add that Armstrong brings this all to the reader's attention in well researched and uncomplicated prose. And will most likely offer the reader new insights.

Outside the UNIA a growing list of opponents, including the black Socialists A. Philip Randolph and Chandler Owen, and the NAACP's Robert Bagnall and William Pickens, were turning their criticism of the controversial Jamaican into a "Garvey Must Go" campaign. Meanwhile, Garvey's former UNIA ally, Rev. J. W. H. Eason-who had been impeached at the 1922 convention-was emerging as a dangerous rival. Eason was assassinated in January 1923, just as he was to testify against Garvey in the latter's mail-fraud trial. Though it may be impossible to determine if Garvey had a role in the killing, the murder generated negative publicity that did untold damage to Garvey and his organization. Throughout all this, the federal government pressed its case against Garvey and his co-defendants on mail-fraud charges stemming from irregularities in the sale of Black Star Line stock. In June 1923 a jury found Garvey guilty and he was sentenced to five years in prison. Internecine feuds wracked the movement while Garvey languished in New York City's Tombs prison, awaiting bail so that he could mount an appeal. As soon as he was released in September 1923, he turned his energy to reconsolidating the UNIA. while considering the best appeal strategy. For the UNIA Garvey resurrected an old commercial message: that economic salvation was to be found in ships. In March 1924 he reconstituted the defunct Black Star Line as the Black Cross Navigation and Trading Co. and bought a ship, the S. S. General Goethals, in time for a tour of it by convention delegates. The shipboard tour proved to be a highlight of the 1924 convention, during which UNIA leadership was stunned by the Liberian government's formal repudiation of the movement's African colonization plans. Despite the UNIA's unexpected setback in Liberia, the movement continued to spread into new places, particularly in America's southern states. Generously illustrated with photographs and facsimile documents, Volume V of The Marcus Garvey and Universal Negro Improvement Association Papers upholds the impeccable editorial standards of the first four volumes. Surprisingly Good ....

This book was recommended to me by a Facebook page of an author I follow. I read the story synopsis and didn't know if I would like it due to the urban element to it described by some of the reviews. I am not into the"hard core" urban stories but I like read to stories with alpha males and the feisty women they get with. Truly had a very hard and tragic childhood and the relationship with her twin sister was complicated. I am glad their stories were different and befitting of them both. I liked how she would get in Bannon's sh*t when she was pissed with him about things he did and I loved how they loved each other through all their baggage and issues. She had a good heart and was about taking care of her family, even her trifling ass sister.

Bannon, my man, I loved him because he was handsome, rich, well-endowed and as flawed as Truly. He went looking for one thing and got something entirely different. Isn't that how life goes most times. I loved his interactions with Truly, the guys on the block and the relationship with the children. I also loved how he handled his business when he felt his things were violated; as a person who loves gangster movies - he could get gangsta and did numerous times. I liked the integration of the other characters in their story that could possibly lead to future stories about them. Like Athena and Jamie, what happened or is happening with them or other family member. I agree that the story could've been shorter and there were some editing issues but, for me, it didn't make it less enjoyable. If her future books will be this gritty and real with a true love story like this one, I will be a forever fan. This was a very good start for her first widely, published book. I want more just like it.......

My goodness..this is the BEST book I have read in 2016. TrulyHappy and Bannon Antonov are two of the baddest people I have ever read. Their meeting was as unconventional as one could dream of. Tru comes form the wrong side of the tracks and struggles everyday just to survive. She was dealt a hand that would have caused the average person to just throw in the towel. She is a natural fighter. The odds are heavily stacked against her, her children, her sister and her neighbors.

Bannon Antonov was born with a golden spoon in his mouth. His inheritance once he reaches the ripe old age of 30 is 400 Billion dollars +. He is an a born leader in his family. He is a mover and a shaker. He seems to have the midas touch, but his alter ego is a killer as vicious as he is successful.

What could these two have in common? They both think the other is drop dead gorgeous and they love good music, literature, dancing and sex with the other. Wow, what was supposed to be a one time thing leads to two children for Tru and Bannon.

If you like raw adventure, sensual love and a page turning read.. this is the book for you. At times the editing needed to be done, however, I was drawn in real deep and was on a mission to complete this story.

This is my first read of JanJan Untamed, but if she puts out another one...I am dead on it...
This books even has some helpful hints on how to keep your man from straying outside of a relationship...Tru is an expert on quite a few things in this book..Again a great read...Well done, well done..

Tru and Bannon are everything...dysfunctional but everything

This was like an old school Sidney Sheldon put in the ghetto and then injected with molly. LOVED it. This had me up reading until 5 am. Yeah, the second half could have used some tighter editing (I could feel that the author was pushing to get it all outoutoutoutOUT) but the story had me on the edge of my seat. The writer has a sharp voice, eye for detail, and ear for voices living in the 'hood that, with more polish, could really be great to follow. (Get this woman an editor!)
This is NOT a sweet romance. There are grown ass issues, grown ass decisions, grown ass situations, and that 'view from the bottom' is real, man. It made me flinch thinking about the neighborhood I grew up in and the women I used to know.
But Tru and Bannon are TIGHT. I have never read a square romance couple be down for a MMF hook up just for the heroine's birthday. That ish was amazing. I almost elbowed my sweet guy in his sleep to yell at him, 'Why can't you love me like Bannon loves Tru??' But I didn't. Because I'm not an abused ex-prostitute/addict/exotic dancer with 4 kids and he's not a billionaire/more than slightly psychopathic/married man with attachment and impulse control issues.
