Good read

Clearly written, easier to understand than most programming books required for my programming classes at university. The book is not designed to teach you a "modern programming language", it is designed to teach you the concepts and principles of the "modern programming languages". Using three languages with the core basic solid concepts (although not the latest and greatest, fanciest, newest languages) is the right idea. My teacher is skipping the Java (13, 15, 17) and the Prolog (19, 20, 22) chapters. All of us in the class have taken C++ and most have taken Java. He is requiring us to learn "D" as well as "Go".

Over all I like the book and find the teaching style much more productive (and readable) than most textbooks on theory, practice and/or programming thus far.

This is a great book for an introduction to programming languages. It offers a very practical guide to learning a few different types of languages and understanding the syntax behind them. Some of the languages it teachings are questionable, however.

Good for an undergraduate programming languages course

I used this book teaching a course in programming languages structures at a small, liberal arts college in the northwestern USA (located not far from the publisher). I have generally been quite pleased with the text and plan to use it again.

PROS:

- Just the right level of detail. There is enough here to let students do a few things in each of the three major languages covered, without overburdening them.

- Very clearly written, in a friendly style. Alternating between "practical" and "theoretical" chapters was a good decision. As a minor point, there are surprisingly few typographical errors.

- Relatively inexpensive, as these things go.

CONS:

- Could use more exercises, but that's true of almost all textbooks.

- Some students argue that the title is a misnomer. Two of the languages covered in depth (ML and Prolog) are nearly 40 years old and not widely used or well supported. Perhaps Scheme would be a better choice for a functional language.

About the Author
Ellen McGinnis earned her Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 1986. She holds degrees in elementary education, special education, and school administration. She has taught elementary and secondary students in the public schools in Minnesota, Iowa, and Arizona. In addition, she has served as a special education consultant in both public and hospital schools and as assistant professor of special education at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. Dr. McGinnis also served with the Des Moines Public Schools as the principal of the education program at Orchard Place, a residential and day treatment facility for children and adolescents with emotional/behavioral disorders. She has been an executive director of student support services in both Iowa and Colorado and is currently a private consultant. The author of numerous articles on identifying and teaching youth with emotional/behavioral disorders, Dr. McGinnis collaborated with Dr. Arnold P. Goldstein on earlier Skillstreaming books and is also author of the newly-released third editions of Skillstreaming the Elementary School Child and Skillstreaming in Early Childhood.

Great resource

I purchased this guide to use for my National Board Certification. I used the ideas for lessons for my high school students. They enjoyed the lessons and learned some excellent skills. My kids liked responded well to the role-playing scenarios suggested in the guide. If you have students who would benefit from learning and practicing positive social skills, you may want to give this guide a try. This version comes with a DVD of the printable materials.

Excellent and accessible commentary

All of Hendriksen's commentaries in the New Testament Commentary series are scholarly yet accessible to the layperson. His commentary on Romans is no exception. It is one of the two best commentaries on Paul's letter to the Romans written from a Reformed perspective. (John Murray's classic commentary is the other.) I used Hendriksen's commentary extensively some years ago when I preached through Romans and also when I taught a Bible study on the book. It is written in a lively and lucid style, one that avoids the jargon that is characteristic of certain commentaries.

One nice feature for the layperson is that the text itself is unencumbered by the more technical material. Comments on the Greek text and other technical matters that are mostly of interest to the serious scholar are found in the footnotes. Also helpful are the "Practical Lessons" and the "Summary" that appear at the end of each section. While fairly brief (approximately 30 pages), the introductory material contains everything necessary by way of background to the book, including author, place and date of composition, addressees, occasion and purpose, text, and theme and summary.

Your Run-of-the-Mill Romans

William Hendriksen writes from a self-consciously and unapologetically Reformed perspective. In and of itself that fact recommends his book(s). For those new to the Reformed faith Hendriksen is a decent place to go to reinforce one's Reformed affirmations. Building off of Calvin and Luther Hendriksen underscores the apostle's doctrine of justification by faith throughout. Though at times showing hints of breaking free of the dogmatic tradition, Hendriksen fails to move beyond where the tradition has taken him. And the epistle of Romans, if any, is a text which ought to do just that. Hendriksen shows little sensitivity to the redemptive-historical movement and eschatological character of Paul's thought, and for that reason, he fails to plumb the depths of the richness of the gospel of God expounded by Paul. At times Hendriksen's language moves into the devotional mode--not necessarily wrong, but certainly out-of-place in a scholarly commentary. All in all, Hendriksen's Romans is a good review of standard ordo-salutis approach with minor variations/improvements, but it is diluted by devotional mush and the lack of a thoroughgoing eschatological outlook. If you are looking for a more solid Reformed commentary on Romans, John Murray's is still the best available.
