This study examines this biblical phrase within its eschatological, soteriological, misthological, biblical, historical, and intertestamental contexts. Critical interactions with Arminian and Calvinistic interpretations and interpreters are met with an alternative proposal that affirms unconditional security. Generally, Arminian and Calvinistic interpreters are agreed that security is conditioned upon perseverance. For the Arminian, you must persevere in order to be elected to go to heaven. If you fail to persevere, you will lose your salvation. This Arminian perspective might be called the forfeitist position. The typical acronym employed for this perspective is PEARS. For the Calvinists, if you are elected, you must persevere in order to go to heaven. If you fail to persevere, this will prove that you were never elected. This perspective could be termed the proveitist position. The way you live reputedly proves whether you are saved. Ultimately, your final salvation is conditioned upon your proving you are saved by the way you live. You must persevere till the end to be saved in the end. The well-known acronym for this perspective is TULIP. The mediating position offered by Cauley, in which unconditional security is defended, has its roots in a historical movement known as the Marrow Controversy. Accordingly, the name chosen by Cauley to represent his approach is Marrowism, which is used for a contemporary expression of the Free Grace Movement. Within the Marrowistic hermeneutic, perseverance is regarded as a means necessary for rewards within heaven rather than for entrance into heaven. The acronym for this perspective is GRAPE. Misthos is the Greek word for “rewards” from which the term misthological is derived. Therefore, from the Marrowistic perspective, perseverance would be considered a misthological issue. The outer darkness is likewise regarded as a misthological (that is, rewards) issue within Cauley’s treatment. Objections to unconditional security in general and to a misthological interpretation of the outer darkness in particular are dealt with in-depth in this two volume work. About the Author
Marty Cauley earned his B.S. from Western Carolina University and his M.Div. from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (where he was also a co-recipient of the Advanced Greek Award). He is the son of a retired Southern Baptist pastor who also graduated from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. Marty has served as the pastor of Southern Baptist churches himself and is currently employed in the computer industry. He and his wife, Dianne, reside in Sylva, North Carolina. They have two sons, Jeremy and Jonathan (with whom he loves to share his passion for biblical research and memorization). He fondly recalls having memorized the Pastoral Epistles with his sons when they were younger. His sons quoted these epistles in their entirety in the AWANA program at the churches they were then attending. Marty has performed dramatic recitations of the Gospel of Mark (among other passages of Scripture).

A Complete Course of Soteriology, Rewards, and Future Things

Volumes 1 and 2 explain in exhaustive detail the critical distinction between: 1) OBTAINING eternal life as a free gift (not reward) from God on the sole condition of faith alone in the Messiah (Jesus) and 2) the promised eternal REWARDS or RECOMPENSE at the Judgment Seat of Christ which results from the believer's deeds in this life. Cauley clearly distinguishes: 1) eternal salvation by grace alone without any supposed meritorious DEEDS on our part from 2)the eternal results of what we DO in this life. Eternal life is therefore seen as a gift (Greek: doran) by grace alone through faith in Christ, but rewards for our deeds are seen as that which is earned (made possible only by God's grace-given opportunity to obey and serve Him). That is, God graciously offers to save us eternally if we believe in Jesus Christ alone for everlasting life and then graciously allows believers to meritoriously serve Him so that He can graciously dispense rewards in the form of acclamation, honor, an inheritance IN the future Kingdom, and/or an inheritance OF the future Kingdom that will follow Christ's Second Advent.
--- The Outer Darkness into which carnal believers will be relegated is not Hell, but is rather their exclusion from PARTICIPATION in the joyous Marriage Feast (celebration) of the Lamb (i.e., at the "wedding feast" to be held only for the faithful believers soon after the Rapture event of the Church). The celebration will be attended only by worthy believers who have overcome the world by faith and by subsequent steadfast faithfulness.
--- This excellent, astute, and detailed explanation of future rewards puts to rest the Reformed Theology doctrine of the "Perseverance of the Saints" as an necessary condition for validating that a person really has eternal or everlasting life, as promised, when (s)he believes. It also disallows any loss of salvation as seen from the Arminian viewpoint. It shows that God is 1) FAITHFUL to His promise to eternally save those who believe in Christ for eternal life (in that the possession of eternal life cannot be relinquished by failure in the Christian life) as well as 2)FAIR in His judgments of our deeds (2 Cor 5:10). Failure in the Christian life leads to loss of Christ's acclaim, rewards, and an inheritance in the Kingdom of God and of Christ. It is the reason that some believers will justly and fairly be excluded from the celebration of the Marriage Feast into "Outer Darknes" away from the "party lights," so to speak, of that glorious and joyful occasion. Such exclusion will result in severe regret (crying and grinding of teeth, etc.) on the part of believers who ignorantly follow the desires of the flesh in this world.
--- As a result of this distinction, Christians should be motivated by the promise of great and eternal rewards as well as the possibility of loss of such rewards and should, with all gravity, follow the Savior by self-denial and co-suffering with Christ and for His cause so that they might inherit the Kingdom with Him and co-reign with Him in it.
--- Because of Cauley's detail and careful reasoning within this work as well as the wealth of material in it: 1) its value will far exceed the price you pay for the two volumes and 2) its content will give you more information that you would think possible! Sandler chronicles the pioneering efforts of the all-black 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Medium Bomber Group during WW II, emphasizing how painfuly aware the pilots and ground crew were of having to "prove" themselves as no white squadron had to. For example, Air Corps chief Gen. Henry Arnold resented their presence in his service: "The Negro tires easily," he wrote in a notorious memo. In a postwar evaluation, the Air Force concluded that the 332nd was a mediocre outfit, "not worth the time and effort"; but Sandler ( The Emergence of the Modern Capital Ship ) argues that the record demonstrates that it was a "good to average" group whose efficiency was warped by the demands of racial segregation. The unit's war record was unique in one respect: in its hundreds of escort missions, the 332nd did not lose a single bomber to enemy aircraft. The 477th never saw action. Drawn from interviews and offical documents, this important history reveals how the wartime experience of a relative handful of black pilots and crewmen opened the way for racial integration of the armed forces within five years after the end of the war. Military historian Sandler ( The Emergence of the Modern Capital Ship , Univ. of Delaware Pr., 1979) portrays a two-front war--against racism at home and the enemy abroad--as he details the World War II experiences of blacks in the three fighter groups that shattered the U.S. Army Air Corps' all-white policy. He begins with the government's 1940 decision to develop "colored personnel for the aviation service" by training them in isolation outside Tuskegee, Alabama, and concludes with descriptions of combat in North Africa and southern Europe, highlighting whites' stubborn resistance and blacks' determination to succeed against the odds. This book complements Richard M. Delfiume's Desegregation of the U.S. Armed Forces, 1939-1953 ( LJ 7/69) and Phillip McGuire's He, Too, Spoke for Democracy: Judge Hastie, World War II, and the Black Soldier (Greenwood, 1988). An expert recounting of the Tuskegee Airmen, the four all- black fighter squadrons that pioneered the desegregation of the US Army Air Corps. Sandler, a military historian, demonstrates how WW II, which became a crusade against racism, caused the beginning of the end of the racial polarization of American society. He tells how--even though blacks performed with distinction in the Civil War, the Spanish-American War, and WW I--military brass consistently undermined and failed to promote black military men. Under some pressure (the Selective Service Act provided for induction of blacks in proportion to their representation in the general population), the Army inducted blacks into its Air Corps, at first relegating them to menial noncombatant tasks like grave- registration, housecleaning, supply, and transport. With the organization of four black squadrons in July 1941, however, the combat role of blacks in aviation began. Sandler relates how black airmen had to overcome prejudice during the training and ``testing and proving'' phases of their service, and how they showed themselves the equal of white airmen in battle over North Africa and Italy. The author contends that the success of the black airmen was more than simply a matter of pride to the black community: It added impetus to the argument that blacks' fight against Jim Crow was as important as the fight against Hitler. Sandler goes on to present two contrasting stories of black air groups, which demonstrate the different ways in which the units obtained the respect of the white military establishment: The 332nd Fighter Group became an effective and important air unit, while the 477th Bombardment Group never entered combat and staged a historic nonviolent protest against discrimination. Not bad, very objective

This book has a hard time deciding if it is a scholarly work or a popular narrative. The style attempts to mix close analysis and an engaging storyline. These two elements are incompatible paragraph by paragraph, and bog each other down. The author changes references to major figures' titles, given names, and especially rank, back and forth without order or explanation. It smacks of rushed scholarship.

Despite these flaws, the book tells an important story. It covers a lot of old material on the Tuskeegee Airmen, but offers up some important new aspects: Evolution of Air Force policy on integration and race, and the role of Black Airmen in the Bomber forces. These two themes were largely based on original research and interviews, The general background of the Tuskeegee airmen less so.

In short, this book has some really good new material on racial politics in the US military during and just after World War II. Its coverage of the combat exploits of the all black US fighter squadrons is objective, but nothing new.

This is a wonderful book which sheds much needed light on an aspect of the Second World War that has either been overlooked or marginalized for much too long -- the contributions made by African Americans who served in the United States Army Air Force (USAAF).

Herein the reader will become acquainted with the history of the 99th Pursuit Squadron, the 332nd Fighter Group, and the 477th Composite Group (which, owing to racial bias among the USAAF's leadership, never saw combat). Taken together, these units constituted the Tuskegee Airmen.

Experienced Secondary Science Teacher Praises this Book

I am beginning my second semester using this book as my primary text for my secondary science methods class. My class has to provide students with a framework for teaching all the science content that they have mastered in their 3 years of college. This book provides an excellent source for students to think about what it means to be a science teacher, to understand major curriculum projects in earlier grades that will impact secondary science, and to address important issues of gender equity, inclusion, and national and state standards for teaching. There is too much material for me to cover fully in a 2 semester hour class, but, I try to talk about and discuss in class most of the content. The activities at the end of each chapter are excellent for giving students practical ways of applying information in the chapter. I have not found another book to equal this book's caliber and practical usefulness.

This textbook is amazing! It really prepares you for the real deal when it comes to teaching science. Along the textbook, Inquire Within, I feel that as a pre-service teacher, I am ready for just about anything. This book covers it all and I recommend it for anyone, teacher or pre-service teacher. It is an amazing book.

C# here I come!!

First, I have to say you'll learn more in a class than you will from any book. I plan on taking classes for C# sometime in the future.

Now, to the review. I've always liked for dummies books. Not because I think I'm a dummy, but because I absolutely love the way they are laid out. The simplistic speech in them, and not to mention the way they take it very slow. This is what I love about them. If I had to pick something I don't like about them... It's the comics. The comics are... Well, not great. (Usually not funny. Sometimes an ironic chuckle... But usually not that great.)

Now to the heart of the review. It's not possible to learn C# from this or any book, but it is possible to learn the fundamentals. The for dummies book does a great job of laying out how to put down code, what different instances do, telling about ifs and thans and also making good use of coding best practices... My pet peeve is messy non-indented code, and this book shows not to do that. (You could, but it looks ugly... Don't code ugly!!!)

So, if you want to learn some simple basics of code, coding practices, and what certain instances do this book will give you a better understanding of how to deal with code and what goes on under the hood. But if you think it will teach you what a year of a programming class will... Think again. There is no magic book available online that will do that. (Unless you got a textbook.) XD

All in all this gets 5 stars because I enjoy learning and this actually does teach!

Good book for VB programmers

Although the "Dummies" title implies a "Beginner" book, this book falls into the "Beginner to Intermediate Developer" range. This is a good book for Visual Basic developers who want to make the conversion to C# or for the beginner. Like all Dummies series, there are ample examples and the author does a great job of explaining the C# language. Windows forms are covered in Chapter 17 and 18 but there is no discussion about Web development or using C# with Active Server Pages (ASP).
Starting in Chapter 6 (Collecting Data - The Class and the Array) there are several really annoying errors, for example, on page 105 the author uses "for (int i = 0; i < 11; i++)" to iterate thru a 10 element array. In the section below this (Array bounds checking), the author uses exactly the same code and says this will fail. The first code should be "for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++)". These errors are scattered through out the book. Still this is a good book and I would highly recommend it.

Good Book for VB Migrators

C# For Dummies claims to take novice programmers into the world of C#. That's probably a stretch--if you haven't programmed before, I suspect you would have a tough time keeping up. But as an experienced VB programmer moving to C#, I have found it quite helpful. Easy, breezy read, with a focus on the language itself (rather than .Net framework classes or Visual Studio). Most programs are console apps, although the book walks the reader through creation of a Windows app. Only negatives: Code on CD doesn't always match up with cook listings (as at p. 261). Also, like most Dummies books, it's a bit light on learning exercises for the reader. I'm using the book as a general introduction to the language, before I dig into more detailed texts.

Half of each page was taken up by interpretations of words used in the play, and some of the interpretations needed

Why to buy the Arden Edition of The Tempest

I looked over the 48 other reviews of this book and found that just one of them reviews the Arden edition, which is the page all these reviews are on, and the page this review of mine is meant for.

First, anyone who looks at what Amazon reviewers think of Shakespeare before deciding to buy a Shakespeare play is going about it wrong. I can't even fathom what motivates people to write an Amazon review and say things like "I read this play and it sucked." Good grief, people, this is Shakespeare, the preeminent artist of the English language. You're welcome to your opinions, but I think Shakespeare's reputation will withstand the amazon.com review page.

As for the Arden edition: I've looked at many and read a few different editions, and this one wins for several reasons. The notes are outstanding even for Arden's generally high standards. The editors do a wonderful job not just of clarifying the language but also highlighting in an unobtrusive way the subtleties of the drama.

Better still is their long introduction, which is beautifully written and comprehensive. A very fine work (you'll want to read it *after* you've read the play, of course.)

And I also want to mention that the book itself is incredibly sturdy -- I am hard on books and like all the Ardens, this is one tough book. Very strongly bound with good paper and covers. It seems kind of silly, but that sort of thing matters to me in a book I intend to read more than once.

Stopping terrorism in its tracks

This should be read in tandem with "Victory Before War," as it provides the depth of coverage on the studies of group practice of the TM-Sidhis program to which VBW alludes. Both these books are so overwhelmingly convincing about the power of higher consciousness to achieve harmony throughout the world--the science is absolutely incontrovertible, having been published and approved by peer review in the most respected scientific journals. There is no refuting the ability to create peace-creating groups throughout the world who will practice these technologies and create peace by doing so. Everyone who has ever despaired of feeling helpless to bring about changes to make the world a better place will find the blueprint for doing so in this incredible book.

Many Errors and Dated Content

I was really tempted to rate this book two stars, but I gave it three because I'm only 117 pages into the book and I hope it will get better.

First, the book has many errors. These are not typos, but content errors that have caused me great frustration and time wasted. I am new to CentOS, so my learning curve is steep. For the beginner, this can be very frustrating. The book is written for CentOS 5.3, but teaches concepts from older versions of CentOS. I'll give some examples of errors from only one chapter - chapter 3:

P. 81 - "Using the Fast User Switch applet, you can switch between different desktop users without shutting down the current desktop." There is no fast switch applet installed or available in a package for download. I googled this and couldn't find anything.

p. 86 - Talks about the following applets for the gnome desktop: Deskbar, CPU Temperature, Moon Data, and Network Traffic. None of these applets exist in CentOS 5.3 and are not available packages (except Network Traffic i.e. gnome-applet-netspeed, which must be downloaded separately, but the book doesn't tell you this).

p. 106 - "Under the 'Link to Device' submenu..." However, the book doesn't tell you where this sub-menu is. You have to infer this from a vague reference at the top of the page. Little stuff like this just wastes the learner's time.

p. 117 - "You may need to run system-config-mouse to get the mouse working properly after this." There is no "system-config-mouse" in CentOS 5.3! Again the wasted time and frustration trying to find something that isn't there.

I hope these errors are not a preview of what is to come.

I am a Computer Science Major at UT San Antonio and have experience with servers... I bought this book expecting to use it as a reference guide... After spending days on problems and attempting to follow this book, I decided to look on the internet and that's where I found answers... The book just scratches the surface of MANY things, such as ftp, backup, and httpd services... I would NOT recommend this book to anyone!
