There are better bluegrass guitar books available.

"Bluegrass Guitar" by Happy Traum was probably the best book of its kind when it was published in 1974, but time and technology have passed this book by. There are better alternatives available, especially if you are a beginner. This book does have a lot of great bluegrass songs and includes standard music notation, tablature, and lyrics. As a collection of bluegrass sheet music it's just fine. My disappointment with this book is mainly with the included CD and it's instructional value. The CD contains less than nineteen minutes of material. Only five of the thirty songs in the book are included on the CD and only one of those is played at a slow tempo for practicing.
For guitarists wanting to learn bluegrass, I recommend, "Teach Yourself Bluegrass Guitar" by Russ Barenburg. It contains many of the same bluegrass tunes as Happy's book and all of them are included on its CD. Each song is played twice, once with lead guitar and once with rhythm only for practicing. (Which is a nice feature because most instructional CDs want you to use the balance control to isolate the rhythm part, but most "boom-boxes" these days don't have that control anymore.) While none of the songs are played really slowly for beginners, Russ isn't burning up the strings either. The songs are played at a moderate performance pace - suitable for learning. The music on this CD is so good that I often listen to it in my car just for fun.
For the true beginner interested in country/bluegrass and flatpicking, I suggest "Acoustic Guitar Primer" by Bert Casey. It's a great book for those just starting out and has some great bluegrass arrangements for beginners. It comes with an excellent instructional CD that has all of the songs played slowly and at performance tempo.

Something for everyone - beginner to advanced

This is an excellent book to learn bluegrass guitar, especially with the CD. Don't be fooled, you should have a strong guitar foundation to really appreciate this book, otherwise it'll be too fast and technical for you. Traum starts off with good basics but quickly moves into very challenging fast paced licks. There is a lot to this book as well: many songs (rather pieces because they are complete and sound great) that will take you a while to get through, with enough variation that you won't get bored. I recommend exploring this book in full and giving it a chance - if will expand your guitar playing if nothing else.
I got somewhat bored and frustrated playing from tab books where the guitar sound is only one part of what I know the song to sound like (i.e. hey! I'm missing drums, bass, another guitar and a singer - no wonder it sounds so thin). This bluegrass style, although other instruments help, will have you playing full satisfying songs with nothing but yourself and your six-string. Plus, its fun and once you get past the corniness, those bluegrass musicians really know how to play. Talk about hot licks!
I would strongly recommend this book if you are considering a book on bluegrass (I took a chance and was immensely happy with it). Look for other Traum books, I have flat-pick country guitar (and love the secton on the Carter family) and my roommate has the Blues Bag and he plays it constantly and it sounds great. Traum is a natural born teacher.

A great book for beginner and on.

Happy Traum's Bluegrass Guitar book is an excellent resource, whether you're a beginner or an advanced player. I've played mostly folk guitar for 12 years and this book helped me swing into bluegrass. It starts with a brief but clear and complete introduction to chords and picking, gets you through some basic runs and then right into the songs themselves. The book is full of fun old songs and even has some newer (for 1974!) bluegrass styles in a section in the back. Each song has the melody line written in standard music notation as well as the guitar version below in tablature. My book is falling apart I use it so often. It's by far the best book I've found for bluegrass guitar!

Wonderful story of love.

An injury during her childhood stripped Lady Lillian Walford's vocal cords until the only sounds she could make were harsh and painful. Her reclusive, loving brother blackmails Anthony Harbreas, Earl of Graydon, into escorting Lily about London during her Season. Although nearly engaged to another woman, Graydon falls in love with Lily and uses a kidnapping setup organized by her brother to convince her to marry him. In an effort to shield Lily from malicious gossip, Graydon doesn't bring her back with him to London after the Christmas holiday, convincing Lily that he is ashamed of her. Secondary romances between Lily's brother and her aunt, forbidden by British law, and a fiery courtship between Lily's cousin and Graydon's best friend are threaded throughout the book.
Magnificent story with well-developed characters and views on how mutes and deaf-mutes were treated by Society. Highly recommended to historical and regency romance fans, particularly those who like a little depth to their romances.

You're a FOOL if you pass this one up!*****10 stars*****

This book is a must read for historical/regency fans. I have never been so deeply moved by reading a novel -EVER. Its rare in a novel to find such thorough character development paired with an intricately detailed story line which moves along in a fast pace. I cannot tell you how many books I've read where I care about the H/H, but not the secondary characters and muddle through those passages or the other way around. There are four (Yes 4!) romances in this book including the H/H and you will care for each one. Each could have easily had their own novel, they are that good and Ms. Paul didn't skimp in their writing in the least.

There is very little in the way of love scenes in the book and I have to admit at first I was skeptical ( I'm really big on steamy love scenes!), but you'll find out as I did that you won't miss it in the least. The 'love' scenes are of a different sort, more of spoken love and action or inaction. Your heart will ache for several characters more than once and you'll despair when you realize that all maybe lost.

This is truly a magical book full of lies, blackmail, redemption, regret and most of all love. If you read this book and don't leave with a warm feeling in your heart, sorry to say it but your a cold fish and there is no hope for you!

A Mute Beauty.

A romance book in which one of the two main characters are handicapped is rare. They are also special to me.

In this book, Lady Lillian is beautiful, yet mute. Due to a servant trying to kill her when she was a child, her vocal cords are permanently damaged. It hurts Lillian to speak and her voice is mannish. So she does not talk.

During Agatha Christie's early life, bridge was a staple of upper middle class English life. Everyone was expected to play because it was a way to keep a room full of people occupied. As a character in REBECCA says, "What else can you DO in the evenings?" Television not having been invented and conversation being out of the question, apparently. This book revolves around an evening of bridge, which I don't play and don't understand. The first time I read it, I thought that my lack of interest in the game prevented me from enjoying it. On re-reading, I think it's just a weak book.

It's listed as a "Superintendent Battle" book, Battle being a Scotland Yard detective who sometimes worked with Poirot. He figures in a few stand-along books, but Poirot is very much present in this one. Also present is Mrs. Ariadne Oliver, the celebrated mystery writer and Christie's hilarious spoof of her own public persona. Colonel Race, a shadowy figure connected to the British Secret Service, has also been invited to the party.

The host is Mr. Shaitana, a stagy, wealthy foreigner who likes to rub elbows with the cream of London's high society. He's also a fan of macabre humor. To provide entertainment for his four detectives, he has invited four ordinary looking people who (he assures Poirot in advance) have all committed murder and gotten away with it.

Dr. Roberts is a genial, popular physician. Mrs. Lorrimer is an elegant older woman who plays a mean game of bridge. Major Despard is the bluff, jovial military officer so beloved of English novelists. And Miss Meredith is just a pretty, friendly young girl who's flattered to be invited to a party with such distinguished people.

There are two tables of bridge, with the host sitting out because of the uneven numbers. Bridge must be an engrossing game because a murder takes place without anyone being aware of it.

It's not a bad book, but I don't think it's a good one, either. Christie specialized in using stock characters and usually she got away with it. In this book, it's almost an insider joke. I like Poirot and Mrs. Oliver and Superintendent Battle and Colonel Race (who shows up again in DEATH ON THE NILE) but four detectives in one book is at least two too many. They're tripping all over themselves and each other. And the ending is the most amateurish thing Christie ever wrote.

This appeared in 1936, along with MURDER IN MESOPOTAMIA and THE ABC MURDERS. Christie was prolific and two books a year was not unheard of, but three is stretching it and I think this is the one that suffered. ABC is one of my favorites. MESOPOTAMIA is set on an archeological "dig" and is of interest to Christie fans because it mirrors her life as the wife of an archeologist. This one is forgettable.

Apparently, others felt as I do about it. In the introduction, Christie insists defensively that it's one of Poirot's favorite cases, but that Hastings (his dim side-kick) thought it was boring. In other words, if you don't like my book, you're just too stupid to understand it! Humph.

To me it has the feel of a book that was put together hastily and without a great deal of care. Christie and her husband lived expensively and their lifestyle required an income far above his modest earnings as an archeologist. I understand that she wanted to cash in on her popularity while it was hot, but I still don't think this book is up to her standards. You may disagree.

It has been awhile that I have read Cards on the Table, but I love to read anything that has Hercule Poirot in it. When you think one person did something Poirot comes up with someone completely different I am now reading After the Funeral and the suspense of why are these other people suddenly passing away. I am wondering who is doing it

A Great Reference Book.

If you've heard Harvey Reid play, you'll know why you need this book: he's pure genius. His playing style is eclipsed only by his depth of knowledge and understanding of music, which he freely shares in this book. It's not a tutorial on how to play in DADGAD, it's a valuable resource to help you play better DADGAD. If you are a beginner, you might not be ready for it. If you're slightly more advanced, say heading toward intermediate level, it will help your playing soar.

About the Author

Mark writes psychological thrillers. He loves stories in which scary things happen to ordinary people and is inspired by writers such as Stephen King, Ira Levin, Ruth Rendell, Ian McEwan, Val McDermid, and Donna Tartt.

Mark is now a full time writer. Before that, he once picked broad beans, answered complaint calls for a rail company, taught English in Japan, and worked as a marketing director.

Mark co-published a series of crime novels with Louise Voss. The Magpies, his first solo, topped the UK Kindle charts for three months when it first released. Since its success, the novel has been re-edited and published by Thomas & Mercer.

He lives in England with his girlfriend, their three children, and a ginger cat.

Another sure-fire hit for Mark Edwards!

I received an advance reading copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

Mark Edwards' new book, What You Wish For, follows Richard Thompson's seemingly unyielding search for his girlfriend, who appears to have vanished without a trace. The more he delves into her life, the more he realises that he didn't really know her at all.

This book is fast paced, with psychological thrills and action-filled moments throughout. We are introduced to a surreal underworld of 'Alien-porn' and Alien Cults. This story is nothing if not original. To be honest, I was a little put off when I read the first chapter and believed that this was going to be a cheesy story about alien abduction. I couldn't have been more wrong; the first clue being that the main character is a complete sceptic about anything other-worldly. However this doesn't stop him from entering Marie's fanatical world, in the hopes of discovering what happened to her. The culmination of which is a race against time.

What You Wish For follows in the path of Mark Edward's previous books with it's relentless twists and surprises. You can guess what will happen next, but you'll be wrong. The characters seem to come to life and the reader can identify with every single person we are introduced and glean something important from the experience of meeting them within the pages of this book.

The ending is beautiful, yet bittersweet.

Another fantastic offering from Mark Edwards which no self-respecting reader will allow themselves to miss out on!!

Mark Edward's What You Wish For is a psychological thriller which crosses over into the world of UFOs, cults, and the fantasy dark side.

Marie Walker has vanished from the face of the earth, she has a need to believe in something. Her boyfriend, lover, and photographer, Richard attempts to find her. In his search, he is drawn into a world of cults and the darker elements of ufology, as he discovers shocking truths. Was she taken or did she go of her own accord?

A story of beliefs, morals, ethics, and codes by which we live our lives. Beliefs in something and the lengths you are willing to go to preserve that belief. A woman who needs nurturing and finds someone as a Savior--and those who are not strong enough to help themselves.

What You Wish For is intense and compelling, as depicts the allure for some and Richard's desperate need to save Marie from its grasp of danger. This book shows how our beliefs can be extremely powerful and the extent people will go to surrender to them. The relationship between Richard and Marie hinged on obsession.

Not my type of book, as a little "out there", and not my normal genre. However, Edwards is a talented writer, and highly recommend his latest book, Because She Loves Me, as more my style! Look forward to reading Magpies.

Good read

When I started this book and discovered alien contact was a big part of the story I did not expect to like it as I am not at all a science fiction fan. I was wrong. The belief in alien contact is a big part of the story but more as a backdrop for the events. It is really my favorite kind of story. It is about people,life and love which is complicated and interesting even in everyday life.

Very detailed book

I rented this textbook for my oceanography class. The book has a lot of good information and is very descriptive. I was surprised to find a lot of information on the sides of the pages that were linked but not directly related. The book also had a lot of graphs and pictures that helped support data and information. It was definitely a good book that helped a lot throughout the course.

This is a great both for anyone interested in oceanography. I had taken many oceanography classes when I was in college, I bought this book just as a refresher. The fourth exceeded my expectations for my purposes for having a reference to the basic oceanography fundamentals.
