About the Author
Robert Gauldin, professor of music theory at the Eastman School of Music, is the author of A Practical Approach to Sixteenth-Century Counterpoint and A Practical Approach to Eighteenth-Century Counterpoint.  He has contributed to many scholarly journals, including Music Theory Spectrum and the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, and served as president of the Society for Music Theory from 1992–1993.

A Comprehensive Theory Text for Modern Students...

I quite enjoy professor Gauldin's harmony text. It was comprehensive and yes, as the publisher's review states concise. Personally, I studied theory/harmony out of several different texts (Benjamin, et.al.; Siegmeister; Kostka; Piston) as an undergraduate and on my own time and I find Gauldin's to be one of the best I have come across. While in theory pedagogy class I was able to study and dissect over two dozen texts from various regions and time periods. "Harmonic Practice..." is a modern text which is great today for the modern student. The use of basic Schenker reductions is an excellent idea and one that helps the students realize linear aspects of the music that many past harmony texts either ignore or too briefly discuss. Gauldin gives a nice balance of both the vertical and linear aspects of music throughout this text (it reminds somewhat,although much better, of Elie Siegmeister's "Harmony & Melody"). The overall appearance of the book is very similar to many of the current high school texts that students use today. This is a comfortable approach for students coming into theory for the first time or with little background in the area. Many of the reviews I have read seem to be critical in areas they know little of. Yes, Gauldin presents the basics (scales, chords, etc.), but many, many undergraduate level texts do so in order for review. Also, many critics have discussed professor Gauldin's scale building on 5ths. While this is in the text it is not the primary focus on scale construction, merely a footnote (p. 27). Overall this is a very good theory text for undergrauates which could and eventually will use some improvements (the misprint in the bass of the second mm. in Ex. 10 p. 107). This book gives much insight into many aspects of beginning theory, basic Schenker principles, voice-leading, form (the excursions are a great idea), and analysis that many other books in this field often neglect. Like most popular theroy texts, "Harmonic Practice" is excellent for an undergrad program, so long as the students have a teacher with a strong foundation in theory. I highly recommend this text.

Gauldin teaches theory from an historical perspective

Robert Gauldin's textbook aims at instilling in the student an awareness of the linear forces that create music. In his preface, Gauldin states that traditional theory and functional harmonic analysis "tends to neglect the melodic aspects of the music and the way those linear forces shape the harmony." This point of view is heartily endorsed by this reviewer. The text is organized into four main sections: basic elements of music, diatonic harmony (including binary/ternary form), chromatic harmony (including sonata form and contrapuntal forms), and advanced chromatic techniques. Five appendices include acoustics, modes and scales, species counterpoint, Jazz and commercial music, and conducting patterns. The text purposes to introduce students to linear-reductive (i.e., Schenkerian) analysis on lower structural levels (reductions tend to be foreground and early middleground). As it is not a text in Schenkerian analysis per se, and as the more remote structural levels are progressively more difficult to perceive Gauldin does not burden the students with Schenker's more esoteric terminology for larger formal constructs. Gauldin also provides the student with an introduction to the implication-realization models of Leonard B. Meyer. The explanations of concepts are lucid and conversational; the analyses are insightful and reveal to the student the fundamental voice leading underlying a given passage. The text is very attractively produced, and joins the texts of Mitchell (Elementary Harmony), Aldwell & Schachter (Harmony & Voice Leading), and Forte (Tonal Harmony in Concept & Practice) in the task of attempting to enlighten and sensitize students to the melodic dimension of music, of which harmony is a by-product. An important by-product, to be sure, and one that in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries assumes the structural role held by melody in the previous centuries. Yet it is important to teach music theory from an historical perspective, and Gauldin's text does just this. He achieves a perfect balance between the vertical and the horizontal dimensions of music

Leave Harmonic Practice in the bookstores.

Gauldin's text is very frustrating to read because the language and presentation is loose and imprecise. He thoroughly confuses the topic of the diatonic scale by defining a semitone on p. 10 (note the misprint in the definition, which is repeated later in the text) by a rigorous method, and then on p. 27 suggests building the scale upward by perfect fifths. Why? The latter is a totally differnt scale and does not even close on the octave. You can't make a scale with only perfect fifths, but the author not only leaves you with the impression you can, but, in addition, that such a scale is the same as the equal tempered scale. If used at all, the concept of building from fifths ought to: 1. be clarified, and 2. introduced before the equal tempered scale rather than the reverse. This is one example. Similarly confusing treatments of basic concepts are found in every chapter.
The book lacks problem sets by chapter. Instead they are put into an overpriced additional book. The problems are often only loosely tied to the text, and tend to start at too high a level of difficulty. There is no attempt to have a graduated set of exercises.
In case you elect not to buy the workbook, the author provides a second set of problems in the body of the text which he calls "examples." Example 9 on p. 106 asks the student to write a voice leading reduction on a staff in the textbook proper, not the workbook. Is this an example or a problem? Why even suggest writing music in the text if there is a workbook?
Many of these "examples" contain critical information and ought to be true examples and either have the answers written in, or given in the margins of the text. By making unanswered problems out of examples the author makes it very easy for a student to misinterpret a concept amd give an incorrect answer to fundamental information and has no way of knowing the error. For the "examples" like the one on p. 109, the student is given no idea of what a correct answer is. To call these problems or exercises "examples" is a lie and creates a terrible format for an introductory textbook for freshmen.
Example 26 on p. 188 gives two lines from Death and Transfiguration by Strauss. The author's point is that accented nonchordal tones transform a banal passage into "one with great emotional impact." Apparently he did not listen to the piano rendition on his CD. It is banal. It has zero emotional impact. Nowhere does he mention the importance of the sustained crescendo eventually introducing a huge brass section for the lines he is discussing. I submit that the superb orchestration of the work, which makes excellent use of the affect of a good brass section, would give the ending great impact even without the accented non-chordal tones. Just listen to the rendition on the CD to hear the how exciting the accented non-chordal tones are by themselves.
New terms are not always defined at first use, and rarely can be found in the index, which is extremely poor.
The copy editing is exceedingly poor leaving many errors.
I have tried to be very specific about the type of problems that plague this text and could cite dozens of additional examples. I absolutely do not recommend using this text.

I just bought this for my Kindle, and I have Eddie's first book, which I will re-read soon, as well. When the student is ready ... I felt that with all that I had why do I need something else. I have met the statements of many lottery jackpot winners, there are numerous stories where people prayed and won a lottery, of varying amounts, that literally saved them at the last minute from losing homes. Some stories go into a thought process, but most you simply glean. What is very common with many jackpot winners and others, is that they use quickpicks and they're not big lottery spenders -- it's affirmations, visualizations (together or not) with a lot of faith and trust.

This book has shown me, through these experiences, where I still need work in my overall transformation, and the amazing amount of what I am doing that is in line with manifesting great things that I desire and require, and that I totally deserve. I really appreciated the second story, because this is someone who manifested good while the outer appearance and circumstances was definitely difficult. Walking "by faith and not by sight" is, I feel, the most difficult part and the second part is dealing with negative people -- the worst of which can be those closest to you, especially if they are part of the religion you grew up with, and you made the mistake of discussing stuff with them. I got called a liar and a heretic and everything in-between by someone I love. Lesson learned -- and you'll hear Eddie tell you this -- zip your lips. On the other hand, in reading lottery stories both in the States and in EuroMillions, people have endured ridicule, because they didn't keep it to themselves, but they obviously managed to withstand the naysayers and realize the truth of this law.

I truly feel I was led to this book today, after listening to Eddie speak on YouTube and not even knowing that this second book existed, and I've been going through thoughts of discouragement, and what I had wasn't enough at the moment.. So this has helped me immensely. I could even tell by reading the one story the exact books Melissa must have read, because I recognized her wonderful affirmations. About four months ago I, too, started writing affirmations and statements down -- just seemed a natural thing.

So, in short this book gave me encouragement and a big boost -- and that, my friend, is gold!

The greatest "down to earth" book on LAO

This is the greatest "practical" book on LOA that I have read so far, so thank you Eddie for sharing with us the real techniques behind LAO. It is easy to get lost in all the books that explains how you should think and act, but the fact is that in the end of the day you give up because you feel that LAO doesn't work for you, This book explains, with examples about real people who successfully applied LAO in their lives, that LAO works for everyone as long as you are serious and consistent about it, and if you really believe and apply in your daily life positive thinking and gratitude. And that even if it takes time to manifest, you just have to be persistent, keep believing and trust yourself. Great...just by reading all the stories in the book I got greater confidence that LAO really works. Thank you again for this great book, the work you have put in it and that you share it with all of us.

Another Winner from Eddie Coronado

This is another helpful book from author and lottery winner Eddie Coronado.

I've been following the suggestions I gleaned from his first book for about 5 months and this stuff REALLY WORKS if you are consistent in your efforts. I have had more opportunities of various kinds come my way in the past few months, than I have in a LONG time, before that. This also includes winning consistently more $$ on tickets I've bought and other prizes too.

If you are in need of some encouragement or direction how to make the LOA really work in your own life, this is definitely a worthwhile book to check out.

I'm taking off 1 star as I would have enjoyed reading a few more true life examples of lottery winners, being included. I did enjoy Eddie's first book more as it's very in-depth and I continue to re-read parts of it, when I'm in need of a "boost" to keep myself on track with affirmations, visualizations etc...both books are well worth the small amount that the eBooks cost and the rewards can be huge and long-term too!

I found several concepts very helpful, especially the Three Key Factors model for executive coaching and the description of the Client Responsibility Model. Mary Beth O'Neill also shares, with examples, how to help a client identify habitual behavioral patterns that might not be effective and a methodology to recognize those patterns and create new, more effective ones. This book is filled with insightful wisdom...a real gem.

Tony Jones (M.Div., Ph.D.) is a theologian, professor, and writer. Excellent

Tony Jones is an expert in youth ministry, postmodern youth ministry and this book shows why. Tony lectured in my class at seminary and it was the first lecture I heard in my first year that totally made sense. Tony knows the landscape has changed and will change dramatically, as fast as we can figure it out it will change.
So many books are stuck in formulas A + B = Great Youth Minstries, Tony goes beyond formulas and explains the landscape. Tony is a tremendous teacher, and yet very humble with the knowledge he has gained over years of youth ministry experience.
I recommend this book to followers of Christ both young and old, especially those who are trying to figure out what in the world is postmodernism.
One warning, don't come to this book for a guide of how to do youth ministry, Tony won't give it to you. What Tony will give you is the knowledge and the tools to figure out what to do in your area and with your students. This is a solid book.

Telling it like it is

Students crave authenticity even as technology seems to move them further away from each other. Authentic community can be acheived and the church can be the place and force that does this. Tony Jones is the father of postmodern youth ministry and he walks his talk. With all of the things youth workers compete with they do have something to offer this generation and that offering is an answer to a hunger for relevancy in a community that cares.
If you can't hire Tony Jones to be on your staff then at least buy this book and you get the next best thing.

A riviting, mind blowing read

The essential guide to youth ministry in the post-modern era from one of the world's experts on the topic. This book is a must for any person attempting to guide or counsel youth in todays culture. The youth of today are drastically different from the youth of even ten or twenty years ago, and to effectively reach out to youth today we need to adapt ouselves to meet them where they are at, and not expect them to come to where we are at.
That is a hard thing and it means our job, as youth pastors, is that much more difficult. In the post-modern, there can no longer be a cookie cutter approch to ministry. This diversity has to take place far beyond a regional setting, and even beyond a local setting: what works in Evergreen, Colorado might not work in Boulder or Littleton or Cherry Creek. But even more progressively, what works with one student may very easily not work at all with another.
In the post-modern arena, Tony explains, the Bible has to go beyond providing a general moral message to our students. The post-modern is very much about the individual and in minestering to post-modern youth, we need to be able to show each student how the message of Jesus affects them personally.
Our ministries, therefore, need to be based more on relationships and less on programs. In todays society, young adults are more busy then they have ever been before. At any given time they may have several different options with what they can do with there time. I highly doubt that any of us have the budget or talent in our ministries to compete with the entertainment our students could find elsewhere, so what we have to do is integrate our ministies to be a fun and safe place for students to come to, where at the same time they have contact with an adult that truely cares about them. It is our ability to care for and love on our students that differentiates us from other activities in school or the community. Only once a student knows that we care for them, and when they feel comfortable enough to come to us in their darkest times, with those things they would be too scared to even talk to their parents about... once a student trusts us that much in their life, then we have earned the right to minister Christ to them.
Students today are different. We can look at that one of two ways: we can either progressively and joyously accept and adapt to the change, or we can miss a potentially wonderful oppertunity. I think we all owe it to the kids in our ministry to pick the former of the two. Read this book. Some of the ideas Tony develops can seem complex and difficult to understand, I'll admit even for myself, but I think that we, being called to minister to God's children, need to understand kids as best as we can, so that they, in return, can better understand Him.

About the Author
Stephen Arroyo (born October 6, 1946 in Kansas City, Missouri) is an American author and astrologer. Arroyo has written seven books on psychologically oriented astrology which outline his theory that the individual's experience of the Solar System's impacts on their personal energy field, both psychological and physical. His works recast astrological concepts in psychological terms, and reject what he perceives as the fatalism and negativity of old-fashioned astrology. His books have now been translated into 20 languages. Regarding his written works, the Library Journal stated: "The simplicity and clarity of his treatment of complex ideas is remarkable; it makes accessible even to the beginner a wealth of understanding....giving meaningful psychological grounding to astrological interpretation."[citation needed] Arroyo has been guest speaker at events in the North America and Europe, and has taught astrology courses in the United States. He has been awarded the British Astrological Association Astrology Prize, the Fraternity of Canadian Astrologers' International Sun Award, and the United Astrology Congress's Regulus Award. He has an honors degree in literature from the University of California and a Masters Degree in Psychology. Previous occupations include marriage counseling, and the practice of a homeopathy and polarity therapy.

Great Book, Great Author, One Small Complaint

This book, like all of Arroyo's astrology books, is incredibly insightful and should be read by every astrologer (though it's probably best to tackle at the intermediate level rather than as a beginner). I don't share the author's take on every topic, but he is one of my favorite astrologers to read and I always benefit from his writing. He has made me a better astrologer in so many ways. My only real complaint is that Arroyo often skips a lot of information, saying the content has already been adequately covered by other authors, and including footnotes with their books and pamphlets. Since the book was first published in the 70's, a lot of those books/pamphlets are out of print and tough to find. This can leave some pretty big holes that are hard to fill more than 30 years later. In any case, this book (ALL of Arroyo's books) should be on every astrologer's shelf; whether your style is similar to his or completely different, you will definitely grow as an astrologer.

Astrology, Karma & Transformation by Stephen Arroyo

This book takes a positive, helpful view of the topic of karma as it can be understood through astrology. There is a particular focus on the outer planets, including a description of their aspects and transits. In each section, Arroyo moves from the general concepts to a more specific cook-book listing of the planets. He discusses karmic relationships through analyzing synastry and progressions, and includes a special chapter on the Ascendant and Midheaven axes. Arroyo refers to Edgar Cayce's view of reincarnation and planetary influences on a particular incarnation. This book provides an exceptionally accessible viewpoint, in the sense that it approaches karma as patterns to be recognized through the astrological counseling process, rather than encouraging specious speculation about specific past lives. A book recommended for astrologers who seek to include an evolutionary spiritual element in their style of interpretation without sounding like Madame Lazonga.

A Valuable Work

Though this book is short I feel it could have been shorter. There is much filler and repeated information. The book is 50 pgs, it could have been 20 if he only mentioned the main points.

That being said there is much useful knowledge that will transform my sex life for the better.

Karezza -the best love

This comprehensive and poetic book on the most amazing way of loving should be in every home where love, sex and the union of two souls is the desire beyond all desires. I am convinced that through engagement of Karezza between two loving people - love will never die and as they say we would all be healthier both in spirit and body. A gorgeous easy read. An encouraging and nurturing book for both sexes and all couples to relish.

old school fundamentals

I enjoyed the way this book highlighted points missed out in newer books. However science has come a long way to clarify physiologically what happens during karezza and this voids some chapters. Over all I valued the fact that there are no new ideas, simply new ways to engage with knowledge we, as a collective have within us.
