text books are not meant to be easy

Well I thought that this was a very good text book. Yes it has few diagrams and LOTS of information, but it is meant as a senior university level plant biochem text, not a pretty-pretty introduction to first year biology. It makes you think about the topics and seek out other references, which is what you need to do in the real world of scientific research. There are absolutely loads of references to, at the time, recent research papers. I don't think the book was ever meant for the Discovery Channel, but rather to be a useful reference for working plant biochemists. It is a complicated, often confusing, contradicatory subject, with no definte "Text Book" answers. It is very heavy for a backpack though.

Excellent Books

We've used homework helpers since pre-k, now my son will be in 1st grade. Every summer I buy 3 of these workbooks so he can spend 20 mins a day doing 2 or 3 pages for the next grade up. He is excelling academically in school and I think these have helped a great deal with his confidence in his school work too.

Nice family project . . . basic intro to family tree

My child and I love Joan Sweeney's books because through the obvious project they encourage (in this case -- creating a basic family tree) they open the doors for more discussion and thus a greater understanding of the topic. This book is very basic, but we've used it as a model for a fun family activity rather than a lesson about our ancestors. My 4 year old son likes its simplicity, and is learning how our family is connected.
Also, for more really fun hands-on learning inspired by literature, check out Sweeney's Me on the Map. It is excellent and will stimulate activities for weeks. Joan Sweeney's purpose in her books is to point out each child's unique place in the world, in the family, etc. Since they are written so simply, even the youngest kids get the point and are empowered by their message.

Basic - perhaps too basic.

This kids book does an adequate job of introducing the relationships in a traditional nuclear family. It includes grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins but stops there. It doesn't extend beyond one generation of ancestors nor does it deal with non-traditional families.
It does provide an example of a nice family tree project that a child can create.
"Who's Who In My Family?" by Loreen Leedy gives a child a more well-rounded introduction to the relationships in a family tree.

Tena Stivicic's other plays include Fragile! (Arcola Theatre 2007) and Invisible (UK tour 2011), both published by NHB. Originally from Croatia, she studied for an MA in Playwrighting at Goldsmith’s University, London and won the European Author’s Award and Innovative Text Award at the Heidelberg Stückemarkt in 2008. Material is better stated in the original Flower of Life Boo

Bob Frissell is merely repeating what's all ready been said in Drunvalo Melchizedek's fascinating Flower of Life books. Why even bother writing this one unless it is to capitalize on the original? The diagrams and examples in "Nothing in This Book is True, But it's Exactly How Things Are," are even taken from Melchizedek's. How disappointing this was to me. This is like the condensed, extremely condensed, version of a superior work (confounding as it is!). In any case, there's lots of talk about secret societies, crop circles, aliens, ascended masters, the pyramids, Mars, etc., etc., etc. You can find information on this stuff in many, many other books as well. I find it intriguing that every book I read about these matters offers a different explanation. It appears that there are many different versions of "how things are" out there and I certainly cannot buy what the title of this book indicates; that the information given here is, in fact, "HOW THINGS ARE." Read this, certainly, for a bit of mind expansion or read it for a bit of fun (however, the sacred geometry does go a bit over the edge, as in The Flower of Life books). But don't take it too seriously. There are lots of other explanations as to who we are, why we're here, where we came from, where we are going, and who is walking among us. Who's right? Who's not right? Who is close to being right? It's all so complicated, isn't it? Yep.

A book for the uninformed

This is a great book that like so many other authors, ties unknowns of conspiracy and controversy together (albeit with no footnotes or references). The thing is people are so hung up on things like the fourth dimension and the theory of evolution - and they pick and peck at it. Unfortunately science is often laughed at because the common man knows little about it. Take for instance this "shift" we must make to the 4th dimesion. Physicists talk of 10-26 different universe dimensions in the exotic area of string theory. The problem with the 4th dimension "shift" is that these dimensions are not parallel universes to our own, but thought to exist on the subatomic scales discussed in quantum mechanics - which size in the region of 10 to the negative 33rd power. A wee bit small for inhabitants like ourselves. BTW through the general theory of relativity, physicists were shown that we do in fact live in a universe of four, not three dimensions. The fourth is time, just like length, bredth or depth - as in space/time. We already inhabit the fourth dimension, sorry.
It is an interesting read for either open minded (don't be so open minded your brain falls out, this is how religions gain zealots) or someone like myself that loves a good twist of fiction.

New Age Mush

I picked this book up expecting and wanting to read about some of the more extreme paranormal happenings going on in this world. Not necessarly planning on believing it or not. First, what this book does good: Every phenomenom and conspiracy and unexplaned event is tied together, making it an intersting concept. It also has an indept, yet confusing chapter on a new branch of geometery. Kind of cool even if you can't understand it. This book had great potential, but 2 major points ruined it. One, Where are his sources? He makes wild and intersting claims, but he gives no reason on why we should believe it is true. The major blunder in this book is the New Age Mush, terms are thrown out that are impossible to understand. For example, "The only difference between dimensional worlds is their wavelengths." What the hell is that suppose to mean?
If your one of those new age freaks, you'll enjoy this book. This book is also somewhat intersting just for the topics a! nd interconnections, but there is much better stuff to be reading and learning with.
