Scott Straus is Professor of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. A good book, but could have been written in a more accessible way. Lot's of academese in here, even for someone who has a Master's Degree in a social science. Not entirely convinced on the line of argument being made, but still a good way to review genocides in Africa and the historical events that led to them.

Crusading was one of the most important features of medieval society. From 1095 until the end of the Middle Ages, military expeditions were launched to recover the Holy Land from the Turks. Those who took the cross did so in the expectation of eternal rewards ¿ but also in the hope that they might win glory and perhaps wealth in this world.

How did the crusades come about? This book explores how the idea of holy war emerged from the troubled Church of the 11th century, and why Jerusalem and the Holy Land were so important to Europeans. It follows the progress of the major crusading expeditions down to 1336, offers insights into their continuing failure, and charts the development of new attitudes toward Islam and the Muslims. The Crusades brought about the first European settlement in the Near East. In this book the hybrid society created by the Crusades in the East ¿ its art and architecture, legal systems, economy and political institutions ¿ are brought to life.

uses the most recent research to provide a broad-ranging account of a topic of vital importance for the study of the past and the understanding of the present.

A commendable achievement

The book is indeed, as per the History Today reviewer's comment, "stout, reliable and substantial" but, by the same token, it is somewhat dense and intimidating, for beginners. This is not to cavil at Professor Jotischky's painstaking study which provides useful insights into the concepts of jihad and the state of the Islamic Middle East prior to the onset of the First Crusade as well as the idea of the Crusade in the West. I would particularly recommend the author's marvelous job in Chapters 8 thru 10. Nevertheless, one would have liked to see a chapter dealing with the intellectual and cultural exchanges (except a brief nod at art and architecture, pp. 145-49) between the West and its overseas extension, the so-called Outremer, that contributed so much to the efflorescence of Western Civilization. Yet the book is a must read, its single shortcoming notwithstanding.

A sad departure from reason

The premise of this book is contained in the descriptive summary, and if you agree with the premise it follows that you'll find it to be a fascinating read. If, however, you do not believe that the Vatican and other global branches of Christianity are conspiring with the antichrist to bring about a perverse new world economic order you will be disappointed, as I was. Concrete evidence to support their assertions is in scant supply. Instead, we are asked to rely upon the personal disillusionment experienced by the Testa's with the Catholic Church as providing the evidence needed to condemn the Catholic Church and other similar Christian institutions wholesale. The rest is sketched in with broad, impressionistic strokes of conspiracy theory, many of which are made to relate to the book of Revelation. Never mind the utterly incalculable social services that the Catholic Church provides (part of a sinister economic plan, no doubt), or the fact that many biblical scholars disagree on what and whom the apocalyptic writings of Revelation refer to specifically. Malcolm Muggeridge (an English jounrnalist, Catholic convert and friend of Mother Theresa, therefore someone who must have gone from light to darkness I suppose) was asked by Ravi Zacharias (a notable speaker on Christian apologetics, surely familiar to the authors) why he had declined to attend a Billy Graham crusade that was appearing in the UK. Muggeridge replied: "Not subtle enough for me". Some people prefer subtlety with their spirituality. If you are one of these people, you will not like this book which, as the name implies, invites the reader to a very starkly defined world of spiritual severity, based on conjecture and wild leaps in reason.

What book is more relevant for NOW?

The reader becomes aware of the clear difference between adhering to the Catholic way of thinking (belief in the Bible and Catholic tradition) as opposed to evangelical thinking (knowing Jesus Christ as a personal Savior and practicing faith based on the Bible alone). This couple was involved in plenty of humanitarian work while in the Catholic Church. They continued even after they left the Catholic Church and married and saw how Jesus could transform the lives of hardened individuals bound by drugs, alcohol and other vices. They were involved in missions work in Africa and when speaking to congregations in the west, they stirred up awareness of the plight of persecuted Christians around the world. Their witness in the USA using a truck with bold statements written on it as well as the symbol of the cross agitated some people but they don’t hide their light under a basket. They care about people who are clearly on a path of destruction and they wish to bring to them the message of Jesus’ forgiveness and hope in this life and in the life to come.
I gave it a 4 rating as opposed to 5 since in case there's a reprint it needs a bit of tightening up (there are many good editors out there). See my other blogs!

I really like the reviews in this book. They give you the info without giving away too much of the plot twists. However, I got a little tired of the prefaces to them which are little mini-stories unto themselves. Some were pretty funny but after a while I have to admit I started skimming those to get to the actual review. Unfortunately the reviews were sometimes mixed into the story so you had to read them.
I will say that maybe this was my own fault as I read it straight through so maybe it would be better divided into chunks. Well worth the price for the amusing reviews.

Best Value For Fifth Edition--beware pagination

This is a facsimile of the 5th Edition Nieto & Bode book, put out by Pearson Custom Publishers for university classes, rather than by Allyn & Beacon--so it is way cheaper (I know it is 5th edition as it gives that information on page three, and it was published in 2008, a year after the 5th edition's 2007 publishing date). As such it has no bells and whistles It is in black and white, but the text is here. It doesn't have a preface, and the text has some funky pagination after p366. Chapter Ten follows Chapter Nine, but somehow, pagination diverges by 40 pages, even as the chapters remain the same. So, weird... Anyhow, for $8 used (rather than $60 second hand for the A&B text) that I paid for it, it is good enough for my uses.

Won't work for graduate courses

I bought this as a cheaper alternative to the original for a class. However, it did not provide a fraction of the necessary information needed to pass the quizzes, complete assignments, etc. I ended up having to buy the complete version anyway, plus Amazon won't allow you to trade this version back in at the Textbook Trade-In site. So I guess I am stuck with it now.

If you only need to read chapters 1-5 this will suit you just fine. However, chapters 6-10 are missing. (compare this one to other editions and you will see you're missing ALOT) Product description didn't mention that.
