Historical Book with Exceptional Info

For years the world believed that the records of Mauser, the famous German firearm company, had been destroyed during WWII. In 1997 Jon Speed stunned the world when he announced that the records had been found in the hands of an old German Panzer officer.
Together with messrs Schmid and Herrmann, Speed wrote this book which contains the history of the Mauser works, the company's rise and demise, the evolution of the Mauser bolt action rifle line and a detailed chronology of the famous Model 98. It also covers some handguns and other Mauser products and experiments. Detailed information is provided on virtually every design aspect and a great number of variations of most components. It includes proof marks, production dates, serial numbers and hundreds of high quality photographs. The original Oberndorf Mauser cartridges are also included, albeit with rather limited information. Even so this is an essential book for every Mauser enthusiast.
Although I intensely dislike landscape format books and find the page design puzzling at times, it is all forgiven because of the physical and content quality of the book. It extends about 470 pages and constitutes one of the greatest reference works on Mauser sporting rifles, if not the greatest.

In a letter to his wife Abigail, John Adams judged the author of Common Sense as having “a better hand at pulling down than building.” Adams’s dismissive remark has helped shape the prevailing view of Tom Paine ever since. It was embodied in an architectural project that he spent a decade planning: an iron bridge to span the Schuylkill River at Philadelphia.

When Paine arrived in Philadelphia from England in 1774, the city was thriving as America’s largest port. But the seasonal dangers of the rivers dividing the region were becoming an obstacle to the city’s continued growth. Philadelphia needed a practical connection between the rich grain of Pennsylvania’s backcountry farms and its port on the Delaware. The iron bridge was Paine’s solution.

The bridge was part of Paine’s answer to the central political challenge of the new nation: how to sustain a republic as large and as geographically fragmented as the United States. The iron construction was Paine’s brilliant response to the age-old challenge of bridge technology: how to build a structure strong enough to withstand the constant battering of water, ice, and wind.

The convergence of political and technological design in Paine’s plan was Enlightenment genius. And Paine drew other giants of the period as patrons: Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and for a time his great ideological opponent, Edmund Burke. Paine’s dream ultimately was a casualty of the vicious political crosscurrents of revolution and the American penchant for bridges of cheap, plentiful wood. But his innovative iron design became the model for bridge construction in Britain as it led the world into the industrial revolution.

Incomprehensible Flow

This book presents a horrible introduction to graduate level fluid mechanics. Some faculties like to teach from this book because of a few well-written sections near the end of an otherwise disastrous attempt on the subject. Kundu or Currie present a much more comprehensive approach to introducing the wonderful subject of fluids and the different solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations.

best GRADUATE level fluid mechanics book

This book is an excellent GRADUATE level text book on fluid mechanics. But to benefit from the book, you will first need to have good if not excellent understanding of undergraduate level material. On top of that, you will need to know index notation and perhaps some tesor knowledge from another class. The book only gives a brief review on this. If you are not familar with index notation or 2nd order tensor, the book by Aris is pretty decent. Some other good books are by Currie, White, Bird. But these books are not really good GRADUATE level texts. They are more of a dual level text IMO. And none of those cover as many important topics as this one does. And they try to avoid using tensor. But unfortunately, tensor is one of the most beautiful concepts in continum mechanics. Any text book on continum mechanics avoiding using tensor is at most a dual level text IMO.

All books mentioned above have examples with analytical solutions. And some of them are quite mathematical. Most of them have no good connection to real applications. However, you learn critical thinking rather than the knowledge from those examples. So, be ready to sharpen your analytical skills when studying those examples. But do not expect to be able to apply all of them to your real life applications.

Full of errors

The book is great, but FULL of erros. It looks like it never was corrected or edited. There are sign error on equations, missing terms is equations, bad correlation of equation numbers and so on. The overall quality of the book is excellent, but the errors kill it. Luckily the teacher of my class was the author himself so I could ask him and correct the errors as I was reading on. However, if you're buying this book and the author is not your teacher (most likely), then you'll run into some anoying troubles.
