Great Topic, Good Execution

This book is a welcome addition to a genre with far too few titles available. The serious critical analysis of "other" cinema is almost entirely unavailable in book form. That said the main shortcomings of this book are the first two essays. The otherwise excellent essay on Tod Browning's "Freaks" is over long and a bit repetitive. And the essay on Castle's "The Tingler" over reaches on a few scatological connections/conclusions. These are minor problems with an otherwise informative and scholarly text on a subject most would not consider worthy of such attention. As a fan of non-mainstream cinema, I wish there were more books like this and I hope the author continues delving deeply into similar subject matter.

An interesting subject chocked full of erroneous information

The topic of taboo and "offensive films" is truly a fascinating subject. It help even more if you're a die hard fan of these films. Naturally, if one likes viewing these films, reading research on the films should be fun and interesting as you explore further and further into the dark realms of the bizarre and obscurity. This read, however, is nothing but frustrating for any person with exploitation background, as it's convoluted with incorrect information and bad research.

As I mentioned, the biggest problem with this book is just wrong information across the board. Not only does Miss Brottman get film dates wrong, she gets chronological order wrong, character names wrong, actors' roles wrong, hell, she even mixes up films (for instance, Deep River Savages by Umberto Lenzi was NOT released in 1981; it was released in 1972. IT started the "cannibal genre", NOT Deodato's Last Cannibal World, which was released in 1977, NOT 1975).

Another short coming that I was frustrated with is the miniscule depth Brottman takes on the subject of Mondo films. She briefly (and when I say briefly, I mean BRIEFLY) touches on the works of Jacopetti, Prosperi, Climati, Morra, and the Castiglionis, the true godfathers of the genre, and then spends the rest of the chapter focusing on direct-to-video compilation death films, such as Faces of Death, Traces of Death, and Death Scenes. These films are a disgrace to the Mondo name and is lame exploitation that makes fun of victims and are meant for sickos' to get their rocks off on. Nothing on the Mondo Cane series, the Savage Trilogy, or the Africa series by the Castiglionis is discussed in ANY detail. More, she mentions the names as part of the genre's history and dives face first into bad topics (also chocked full of erroneous information).

The topics on the more mainstream films (such as Freaks and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre) are more correct and professional (though years are often incorrect), but information on these films is much more readily accessible, which would probably be why their sections are more accurate. Also, books dedicated entirely to that one film are available, with more substance, history, and information all together. Those looking for good research on obscure films then should beware.

Overall, it's a mess. A simple check into all of these films' backgrounds will be able to point to the errors of Miss Brottman's information. Plus, most of the information really is nothing new. I was disappointed in the fact that I ordered this book for research, but was unable to cite anything that I didn't already know (or, again, covered by different books in much more depth). An interesting read for Miss Brottman's opinions, but a very unwise choice for good, solid factual information.

No jargon, smooth read.

This book was helpful to me in a grad course I took on horror films. Although its an academic book, its not too hard to read, not too much theory or jargon, like similar books. Also the author treats these movies tongue-in-cheek. He's not claiming they're great films, just that they effect you in a certain way. Better than most academic books about horror films. Could use more pictures.

The culture of the society he served and aspired to join must be considered, too. As she proceeds through Handel’s life, Harris embeds him in the institutional realities of eighteenth-century England, where entrepreneurship predominated. London suited the young musician, who had set out to pursue as independent a career as possible—a goal attainable, however, only by having the right friends. Handel was good at friendship, to the extent that his life and theirs—six in particular, whom Harris chronicles as extensively as she does her main subject—are inextricable. The composer followed their leads in business (his first opera company was structurally similar to the East India and other great trading companies); negotiated with them, by means of carefully ambiguous roman à clef scenarios for his operas, the politics of a kingdom with a contested throne and, by similar means in his oratorios, the religious contention of the day; sympathized with them about loveless, arranged marriages (well he might, since he was socially ineligible to marry at all) via many an opera’s plot; and privately entertained and taught them music with his instrumental works. This is a good read, and you can't say that about many books by musicologists. A tour-de-force of detective work, starting from Handel's wills, the book illuminates both Handel's life and life in eighteenth-century England by uncovering his circle of friends and associates. Invaluable for musicologists

I am not a musicologist but I enjoy Handel's music. I received this book as a gift and started in without carefully reading the introduction. As I read chapter after chapter, each of which seemed to take me back to a restart, I had a little bit the feeling of "Groundhog Day." (Wait, we're in 1737 again?) Finally I caught on. What the author has done, and I belatedly realized this was brilliant, was to try to compartmentalize Handel's various lives to explain the effects of social status, law, trade, collecting, religion, etc. on his major compositions. Aha! moment.
I expect the author realizes that all the various phases of his life bled into one another, but this effort to explain by categories gives one a unique perspective on the man and the music; by deconstructing a life, we can put it back together in a fresh and interesting way.
The voluminous section of notes and a thorough index will make this book invaluable for musicologists.

A great book revealing a look into the prophetic

This book is very informative and has practical steps to help you understand the the different ways God may lay something on your heart. The emphasis on allowing prayer to guide you to obtain the full meaning and what to do with what God places on your heart is very good. The message of unity between believers and growing close to God permeates throughout the book. The closer you get to God the more He can trust you more and start to reveal things to you on a more regular basis. I really like the way the author explains things in a simple and easy to understand wording. You must get this book! It will help you to grow and learn. Very good book!

This book was awesome. I'm currently studying for my masters in Old Testament so I'm used to reading text books and exegetical research thesis. Though they are good books and research materials, but very few have stirred me to loving Jesus more. This is a great book and it answers most questions Seers have. This book is an invitation to anyone who desires to see more and a place of comfort for those who walk in this realm already. The author removes fear and superstition from the truths God wants to give his people. To be honest when I got this book for Christmas, I read the first few pages and could not put it down. I finished it in two weeks and still feel the impact of it. Brenda's love and intimacy with the Lord is inspiring; and she is a living witness to the majesty and wonder of Christ Jesus. All who read this will be carried into the spirit of wisdom and revelation. I keep this book on my shelf when I need a reference. I recommend this book to any young adult who is freaked out by what they see. Trust me, you're not crazy; you are very normal. If you are looking for wisdom and understanding, get this book! Any young Seers like me looking for help, get this book and meditate on it! If you're a pastor and you have Seers in you congregation and you don't know how they operate, get this book.
