About the Author
Ross Brunson has more than 20 years of experience as a Linux and Open Source trainer, training manager, and technologist and is author of the popular LPIC-1 Exam Cram (QUE Publishing). Ross is currently senior training/certification engineer at SUSE and recently spent almost five years as the director of member services for the Linux Professional Institute, where he contributed to placing several LPI courses into the Cisco Networking Academy, conducted dozens of Train-the-Trainer sessions, and provided sales enablement support for the worldwide Master Affiliate network spanning more than 100 countries. Ross holds a number of key IT certifications and is also author of several successful technical books and dozens of technical courses for major organizations (including the first LPI Certification Bootcamps). He is skilled at both contributing to and building community around IT products. He lives in Paradise Valley, Montana, with his family and enjoys traveling far and wide, winter sports, and photography.

Sean Walberg has more than 20 years of experience as a Linux administrator, network engineer, and software developer. He has written extensively on Linux certification for IBM and NetDevGroup, and has contributed to other books both as an author and technical reviewer. Sean currently works at Northfield IT and is responsible for infrastructure automation for a large professional sports league. Actually the best LPIC book

Bought that book as an pre order directly from Pearson. I waited long for an actual Pearson Cert Guide due to my poor experience with other books.

However, this book provides the student that nice Pearson concept of pre chapter questions and after chapter questions. Also this book is much bigger and gives more details than others.

The delivered Cert Engine on DVD is well known and a good tool for asking questions about the read chapters/topics.

But this book suffers from many many errors (dozens!!!)...small typos and to big conceptual misunderstandings from the author in regard of some topics.
Brunnsson seem not to understand how pgp concepts work, and he copied many parts of his 10 year old book into this one...on some pages 1:1 which leads to confusion, because some parts are missing because the text belongs to the old books.

Specially in the last 2 chapters I had that feeling, that the authors were in a hurry to get the book done and that pearson never read that book carefully before printing it.

Than the exam engine...here are dozens of bugs like clicking the right answer, get the right description to it, but the application still count it as a fault. Also many chapters do not include the questions out of the book...for me, very frustrating.

The book is good, no doubt. I go so far to say, it is the best Lpic-1 book out there...but it is a typical 1st release Edition with lack of quality control from the publisher.

What I miss is a contact address to the author for feedback like in the CCNA Wendell Odom books (also Pearson). It's just a cool feeling when the author thanks to his reader when finding an error...but this contact does not exist here.

Big plus: the content is (beside the errors) very accurate regarding to the exam --> no Init-V nonsense --> everything is adapted to systemd

I'm sure, the 2nd edition will fix much errors.

I'm studying for the L+ exam as part of my college curriculum and I wasn't satisfied with the materials provided by the school so I bought this book. It is very well organized and written and I like the practice test format provided on the DVD included in the book.

About the Author
Giulia Enders is a two-time scholarship winner studying medicine at the Institute for Microbiology in Frankfurt. Her presentation of Darm mit Charme (Gut Charm) won her first prize at the Science Slam in Berlin and went viral on YouTube.

Jill Enders is a graphic designer whose main focus is communication in science, and the founder of a collaborative network of designers and scientists.

David Shaw was born in Leeds, UK. He has worked at Deutsche Welle, Germany’s international news broadcaster since 1995. Shaw has an M.A. from the University of Bath in Interpreting and Translating German and Russian, where his thesis was on the adaptation of German Television news texts for an international, English speaking audience. He regularly translates books from German to English.

Chapter 1: Gut Feeling

The world is a much more interesting place if we look beyond what is visible to the naked eye. There is so much more to see! If we start to look more closely, a tree can be more than a spoon-shaped thing. In a highly simplified way, “spoon” is the general shape we perceive when we look at a tree: a straight trunk and a round treetop. Seeing that shape, our eyes tell us “spoon-like thing.” But there are at least as many roots beneath the ground as there are branches above it. Our brain should really be telling us something like “dumbbell,” but it doesn’t. The brain gets most of its input from our eyes, and that information is very rarely in the form of an illustration in a book showing trees in their entirety. So, it faithfully construes a passing forest landscape as “spoon, spoon, spoon, spoon.”

As we “spoon” our way through life like this, we overlook all sorts of wonderful things. There is a constant buzz of activity beneath our skin. We are perpetually flowing, pumping, sucking, squeezing, bursting, repairing, and rebuilding. A whole crew of ingenious organs works so perfectly and efficiently together that, in an adult human being, they require no more energy than a 100-watt light bulb. Each second, our kidneys meticulously filter our blood—much more efficiently than a coffee filter—and in most cases they carry on doing so for our entire lives. Our lungs are so cleverly designed that we use energy only when we breathe in. Breathing out happens without any expenditure of energy at all. If we were transparent, we would be able to see the beauty of this mechanism: like a wind-up toy car, only bigger, softer, and more lung y. While some of us might be sitting around thinking “Nobody cares about me!”, our heart is currently working its seventeen-thousandth twenty-four-hour shift—and would have every right to feel a little forgotten when its owner thinks such thoughts.

If we could see more than meets the eye, we could watch as a clump of cells grows into a human being in a woman’s belly. We would suddenly see how we develop, roughly speaking, from three tubes. The first tube runs right the way through us, with a knot in the middle. This is our cardiovascular system, and the central knot is what develops into our heart. The second tube develops more or less parallel to the first along our back. Then it forms a bubble that migrates to the top end of our body, where it stays put. This tube is our nervous system, with the spinal cord, including the brain, at the top and myriad nerves branching out into every part of our body. The third tube runs through us from end to end. This is our intestinal tube—the gut.

The intestinal tube provides many of the furnishings of our interior. It grows buds that bulge out farther and farther to the right and left. These buds will later develop into our lungs. A little bit lower down, the intestinal tube bulges again and our liver has begun to develop. It also forms our gall bladder and pancreas. But, most importantly, the tube itself begins to grow increasingly clever. It is involved in the complex construction of our mouth, creates our esophagus, with its ability to move like a break dancer, and develops a little stomach pouch so we can store food for a couple of hours. And, last but not least, the intestinal tube completes its masterpiece—the eponymous intestine or gut.

The masterpieces of the other two tubes—the heart and the brain—are generally held in high regard. We see the heart as central to life since it pumps blood around the body. The brain is admired for its ability to create a dazzling array of new mental images and concepts every second. But the gut, in most people’s eyes, is good for little more than going to the toilet. Apart from that, people think, it just hangs around inside our bellies, letting off a little “steam” every now and then. People do not generally credit it with any particular abilities. It would be fair to say that we underestimate our gut. To put it more bluntly, we don’t just underestimate it, we are ashamed of it—more “guilt feeling” than “gut feeling”!

I hope this book will change that by making use of the wonderful ability that books possess to show us more than the world we see around us. Trees are not spoons, and a gut feeling is a good feeling!

Lively writing and fun facts, not all of them true

The first chapters of on gut anatomy and mechanics are a delight, written with authority and high spirits in equal measure. I learned a lot. Enders has a lively sense of curiosity and humor, and an endearing habit of anticipating readers' questions and answering them with great detail and patience. I loved the details. I was disappointed in the later chapters, maybe because I know more about the microbiome than about gut workings. There was too much "truthiness," too many trendy hypotheses and scientific urban legends presented as fact. Martin Blaser's hypothesis that loss of H pylori is behind the epidemic of asthma is fascinating, maybe even true, but not yet evidence-based. There is no real evidence that H pylori causes Parkinsonism, or toxo (cat parasite) schizophrenia. There's no problem in presenting these as intriguing hypotheses, as long as you don't give the impression they are well established science. Perhaps the strangest was the blithe claim that salmonellosis in German eggs is caused by farmers buying cheap grain from Africa, where random turtles walk about in the fields pooping on seeds. Leaving aside the xenophobia, most outbreaks of Salmonella do not come from strolling exotic reptiles but from domestic, endemic infections in livestock. Recently, Germany has spawned numerous European outbreaks of salmonellosis in the old-fashioned way: poorly regulated high-density factory farming with birds crammed into tiny, filthy cages. The most recent outbreak of Salmonella enteritidis PT14b has resulted in nearly 300 cases, and one death in the U.K. It has been traced to Bayern Ei, a notorious egg producer in Bavaria. In the U.S., Aldi's has recalled contaminated German chocolates from its shelves...

Best popular science writing EVER - a brilliant, witty treasure trove of insanely useful information

I don't believe I've ever learned more useful information per page than in "Gut" -- and I'm trained as a doctor! The whole time I'm reading this, I'm shaking my head, thinking, "How come we weren't taught that in med school?" A longer, more thorough review is forthcoming, but in the meantime, if you are a fan of eating or have ever eaten in your lifetime, ever had a "gut feeling" about anything, or happen to possess a digestive tract, you need to read this. Is there anything more fundamental than knowing how your body extracts energy and nutrients from food? Dr Giulia Enders covers all aspects of the gut and how it relates to your mind, mood, hormones, and health, and does it all in a style that's accessible to the 10yr old and enjoyable to the seasoned professional.
Also, she's freakin' hilarious. More to come.

Everybody poops

I learned some stuff about the stomach I had no clue about. There is some really good info about current science around the gut flora along with stuff about food digestion such as oils, carbs, meats and how they are digested. There are some nice images along the way that are light hearted and helpful to explain the process. Overall it is a fun read and I highly recommend it.

The Grand Daddy of Methods Books

This is the one that you'll keep after the class is over. You'll come across some odd methodological issue 5 years after you buy the book and it'll be in there, explained perfectly. The section on interpretation of interactions is particularly great. You can't learn more about power and meta-analysis more efficiently than by reading the relevant chapters in here. The ethics chapter is more entertaining than anything like it in any other text. I've been teaching from this book for 9 years and still get students calling saying thanks for making them buy it.

The best of the best

This Rosenthal & Rosnow book is destined to be a classic (the 2nd ed. already is). Rarely will you encounter this level of philosophical breadth, statistical depth, and historical perspective so well unified in a single text in any field. And all of it is as clear as a glass of gin in the sun. I keep mine close by my desk and refer to it often.

The next generation of behavioral science students will be lucky to start with this one and have it as a lifelong reference.

Essential and provocative, though not definitive

In this book, Shoko Yoneyama gives details of some of the chief problems that have faced Japanese education over the last 20 years, and continue to do so - including bullying and school refusal. The thoughtful, in-depth coverage of these issues in Japan has a good claim to be more thorough than anything else in print in English. One of the book's great strengths is the way the author draws on much material in Japanese. (Previous reviewers give the impression the material and the arguments are not available in Japanese, but actually both are well-known, even if not from this author.)
Yoneyama argues that one of the root causes of problems such as bullying and school refusal in Japan is the fact that Japanese schools (or at least secondary level schools) over-socialize children with rules and other forms of regimentation, the result being fatigue, pressure for super-conformity, and a tendency to copy the oppressive power-dominant relationships the school embodies. The arguments are powerfully made and well supported with a range of evidence. Having said this, I think readers should think about the arguments and evidence carefully and not just accept them uncritically. Here are some of my thoughts and questions. First, the thesis is sometimes difficult to falsify. For example, Yoneyama rightly points out that it is difficult to get accurate information on the extent of bullying. She comes close to implying that we can never know that bullying is not taking place. But should we then assume that bullying is going on, even when we can find no evidence? Secondly - a related point - there is occasionally a tendency to discount evidence that shows Japanese schools in a positive light. For example, Yoneyama's survey results indicated that Japanese students felt less academic achievement pressure and thought their school was less competitive than did Australian students, but she does not seem to regard this as particularly positive or as evidence against her thesis. Thirdly, and again related, the vast majority of the qualitative evidence she gives is from students who have had serious problems with the Japanese school system. How do children who have not had such problems see things?
Other writers such as Thomas Rohlen and Gerald LeTendre have given more positive views of Japanese secondary level schools. Yoneyama's book is very important in giving a different analysis and in giving a voice to children who have had major problems. I hope that readers and students will take seriously the arguments and evidence from these various researchers, rather than just taking one view as the authoritative truth. And I really hope that Routledge issue this book in paperback so that I can actually afford to buy it!

A wake up call to Japanese education

This book is a MUST read for anyone trying to understand the forces at work in Japanese schools and society (one and the same). I found it not only well documented but also highly readable, gripping even in parts, rare for an academic book. I only hope it will soon be published in Japanese so that the Japanese public can also benefit from Yoneyama's insights and in-depth research.
Contradicting the idea that Japan is the model education system, as seen in the eyes of many westerners trying to boost their own systems, Yoneyama shows how the excessive control from the top down by administrators of teachers and teachers of students is ultimately killing the system. At the same time students, in a desperate attempt to salvage some control, are literally killing themselves and each other.

ijime in japanese schools

This book provides documentation of the most sensational examples of ijime [bullying]in Japanese schools. It also gives examples of teacher-assisted ijime and the tragic consequences. Too often, these stories are buried and meant to be forgotten. It is the shameful underside of the Japanese school system. In a country where appearances are everything, the instances of bullying in schools are denied or delicately expurged form the national consciousness. No wonder it has never been translated into Japanese.

Another great book in an incredible series. Rosenberg maintains the image of the characters, and keeps with the spirit and soul of the books. A fitting end to a truly exciting hero in Karl Kullinane. This, along with the three previous entries, are must reads for all fantasy fans

The end of one era, the beginning of another...

This book told of the demise of one of the best characters in this genre's history. I still haven't forgiven the author for it. Speaking as one who was with this series from the beginning, I must insist you start with the first book ("The Sleeping Dragon"). "The Heir Apparent" also tells of the coming of age of another main character, while continuing to build on established characters. In context, this story is the perfect "swan song" for the character who has grown so much as a warrior, a leader and a person. To be honest, I couldn't tell you what the book would be like read out of context. All I *can* say is...If you've never read any of Mr. Rosenberg's "Guardians of the Flame" series, you better get crackin'! Half the fun/agony is waiting for the next one!

The most exhilarating text !

I have a personal small "library" of scientific books. This book has to be, by far, the most well structured, well explained, systematic and exhilarating read. I would rate this book as number 1 among possibly 50 similar books that I have read. If you are technically enthusiastic, would like to know about anything and everything pertaining to science and have a jolly good read at that, I would highly recommend this book. Asimov is gifted as a writer, in that he takes the most complex concepts and explains it in such a way, that a first-time reader on the subject feels confident of his/her understanding. If you have lots of time (900 pages of size 10 text!), are a thinker and want to begin to understand the great works of genii ranging from archimedes, galileo, newton and einstein, this book is for you! Well done to a man long gone. He leaves a legacy of genius !

Just a great book

I was a young reader and my personality was still not set. So many "bad" books kept pulling me in the wrong directions. I read all bestsellers though they taught me nothing. A day came when I had nothing to read and I happened to come across this book in my elder brother's library. It was written long before I was born. Yet, as I was truly bored, I began to read it and I was hooked before long. The world of Science was visible to me and, for the first time in my life, it looked attractive. I can truly say that this book changed my life. I now am completing my pre-med degree and will be off to medical school before long. I have never been happier; Science has become my life. Thank you Isaac Asimov.

Update for anyone interested 12/20/2011:
Ha! I cannot believe that was me! I had such an odd, self-important way of writing back then. I graduated magna cum laude with a B.S. in biology with minors in chemistry and English. Managed to get sidetracked, became somewhat of a hippie, and did not go to medical school. Don't freak out yet! Science is still my religion, but now it is specifically environmental science. I was accepted into a lovely graduate program and am on the verge of finishing my thesis. Have sent out a few applications for phd programs in ecology. Overall: toss aside your Da Vinci Codes and whatnots, kids, because science will rock your world!

My First Choice Science Text

In my opinion, Asimov provided the most entertaining and readable scientific "texts" around, and this comprehensive volume is his best. Despite the fact that I am a layperson, and this book is nearly 1000 pages, I devoured it and longed for more. If you are not a lover of the sciences when you begin Asimov's Guide to Science, you will be when you finish! Anyone 12 years and older should read this book. It will change the way you look at the universe.
