This first English translation of Leontius of Neapolis's Life of Symeon the Fool brings to life one of the most colorful of early Christian saints. In this study of a major hagiographer at work, Krueger fleshes out a broad picture of the religious, intellectual, and social environment in which the Life was created and opens a window onto the Christian religious imagination at the end of Late Antiquity. He explores the concept of holy folly by relating Symeon's life to the gospels, to earlier hagiography, and to anecdotes about Diogenes the Cynic.

The Life is one of the strangest works of the Late Antique hagiography. Symeon seemed a bizarre choice for sanctification, since it was through very peculiar antics that he converted heretics and reformed sinners. Symeon acted like a fool, walked about naked, ate enormous quantities of beans, and defecated in the streets. When he arrived in Emesa, Symeon tied a dead dog he found on a dunghill to his belt and entered the city gate, dragging the dog behind him. Krueger presents a provocative interpretation of how these bizarre antics came to be instructive examples to everyday Christians.

great inspiration for a new Christianity

This book about the wise-fool saint Symeon was so inspirational to me that I've made a deeply personal vow to religiously observe July 21st by spreading all manner of golden chaos and absurdem as possibly befits and behoves me and my oceanic cult --Ark Spurting Blood; which observes the Dominator shipwreck as a religieous object cast out from the oceans stomach and which we consider to be possibly a great transporter of and for the flesh,and blood, and spirit of Saint Symeon when he arrived on the West coast (after ascension) to convert the Chumash natives-- who in return converted him to the Jimson weed Burning Wheel. A fine book ; that will truely bring forth the real inspiration of what Christ in his swarm wisdom was trying to get across to the ignorant hordes and disciples-- who in little moderation, got mislead through their lack of insight and veneration for truths outside their fears of insects and animals.

Just reading and learning about this odd fellow, St. Simeon of Emesa, Holy Fool. Would love to get a copy of The Real Deal book here, out of print for some time.

In the mean time, a good place to look for thoughts on St. Simeon of Emesa and other the Holy Fools of the Eastern Church would be Bp. Kallistos Ware and his The Inner Kingdom: Volume 1 of the Collected Works by Kallistos Ware (Aug 1, 2000) or Abba, a collection of articles done recently in Bp. Ware's honor and for his 30 plus years of service at Oxford teaching about the Eastern Church. So, look to those two works with a chapter each on Holy Fools. Abba: The Tradition of Orthodoxy in the West (Festschrift for Bishop Kallistos of Diokleia) by Andrew Louth, Dimitri E. Conomos, Kallistos Ware and John Behr (Feb 6, 2003). In Abba you'll find an article by a student of Ware's on St. Simeon of Emesa and other great and holy fools. In Bp. Wares work you'll get to know what it is like to be the intellectual pope of the Eastern Church, a bishop a monk/priest a professor and at the same time a "student of fools". Got to like that.

In the mean time, if you're reading this and would like to send me a copy of this book if you have one? I'll make you famous with the fools of heaven with my prayers. Until then, I'll just read various clips online or the text on Google books, a trove out out of print books. This one is a couple decades old.

In the tale of St. Simeon I love the part where after praying and living the ascetic life for 29 years in the desert near the Dead Sea, this holy man tries to talk his friend and fellow monk, St. John of Edessa, to join him in his new mission. The Simeon plan received in a vision is to leave the quiet of the desert and a life of prayer to go to the bustle and hustle of town in order to "mock the world". And so he let his freak flag fly in this way and made way to the city. Crossing the threshold of the town gate he did so while dragging the carcass dead dog on a rope behind him. The youth of town joined in and beat him with sticks and a few stones. Thus performance art was born. The next day, being holy, he of course went to church. But he went to church to:

a) pinch out some candles, extinguishing the flame
b) throw nuts at the back of the heads of some ladies
c) tip over the pastry tables at the back of church on his way out.

Hmmm. Not going to go down well with the Greek ladies in the kitchen who do all that baking for festival.

And yet he did ordinary saint type things. He fed the poor and healed the blind. But this healing he did with the standard ecclesiastical tool of a mess of cooked sausage, link by link, tossed over his shoulder like a cleric's stole. He carry a pot of mustard on his belt along with the links as he munched toured town. During Lent no doubt. Yes, he applied mustard via that sausage to an almost blind man, making his eyes burn with pain until he ran to a real doc in town and and went totally blind along the way. Only later to come back to the fool St. Simeon who healed him, returning to him his sight.

The author Derek Krueger takes us on an absurd rail ride with a strange holy man who according to the record of Leontius, "...walked about naked, ate enormous quantities of beans, and defecated in the streets." Something oddly wonderful here to me about a man not worried at all about what people might think of him. But this was part of his game, not to appear holy or take credit. Who doesn't wish they could see more of this in church life?

This 7th century man man wasn't only an odd fellow but he cared about odd folks and the poor and the blind. Yet he'd love to go to uptown parties and mock the rich. Got to love this odd chap who very much wanted zero credit for any good deed that might be laid at his feet. I doubt, too, that he'd be found in a pretty black cassock dangling a prayer rope on his wrist in the local supermarket.

Love the wood cut on the cover, of St. Simeon dragging his dead dog, making his grand entrance into Edessa that first day. Most painted icons you see today of this saint put him with two other nice church fellows who share his day on the commemoration calender; all three dressed up church pretty of course. How dumb is that. I like the image on the cover of Krueger's work, the wood cut of the saint dragging his famous dung hill dog, dead as dead can be, youth beating him as he made his way.

St. Simeon the Holy Fool was buried when his time was done; in a boot hill graveyard set aside out of town for the indigent and homeless. Where losers go and nobody cares. Yet he is dear to me in that I was blessed last year to visit Mar Saba their at the edge of the Holy Land; where this blessed and odd man was tonsured as a monk in those early centuries.

God indeed loves the the misfits and some are just better at it than others I think. Because they find the secret of being holy in their oddity. So, there's hope for me. By your prayers, St. Simeon. By your prayers.

One of My Favorite Books of All Time!!

Zig Ziglar lives on in his wonderful guide to life..."See You at the Top"...I had the good fortune to take the Zig Ziglar "I Can" course in 1985, and this book was used throughout the course. It's not just a self-help book, but a guide to a new way of thinking and living! I am truly a better person, look at things more positively, and take life one day at a time. I have given this book to friends and associates many times. A must read you will re-read over and over again!!

A Classic - But Parts are Getting Dated

This is a 40 year old classic - and is beginning to read that way. Zig Ziglar is one of the world's best known, prolific speakers and authors on topics such as selling and motivation. See You At The Top is his signature book, and is filled with Zig's homespun wisdom, stories, values, beliefs and sayings.

While elements such as his railing against Communist domination and some of his currently "politically incorrect" views on sexuality, religion, and lifestyle(not that Zig would care one whit about the political correctness) are either dated, potentially insulting to the reader, or both, and represent conservative (and in some cases dated) views - the premise is solid - have a set of values and beliefs, live by them. Cultivate good habits, see the good in yourself and others. Life life fully and live it "right".

This is not a "sales" oriented book, like many of Ziglar's works. This is a treatise on the philosophy of life - living it the Zig Ziglar way. It's worth the read, and is a classif and still popular 40 years later for a reason - it still resonates.

About the Author

Rossella Rago is the host of the popular web cooking show Cooking With Nonna (www.cookingwithnonna.com). On the show, Rossella invites an Italian-American nonna to cook with her, sharing traditional Italian recipes and fond memories of childhoods in Italy. Rossella has traveled the country and performed cooking demonstrations in many cities across the United States with local nonnas as her partners.

In 2010, Rossella, together with her mother and her Nonna Romana, participated in the "Italiano Battle" episode of the Food Network's 24 Hour Restaurant Battle; Team Nonna won. Rossella spent her childhood in the kitchen with her maternal Nonna Romana, learning the long legacy of recipes from Puglia passed down through the generations for centuries. oriented to the somewhat still novice node.js programmer but still valuable

As in previous occasions, Packt Pub sent me this ebook for review. Naturally, as the book's title says, this is not a general / beginner's book for Node.js, but, in spite of that, the book starts with an opening chapter explaining the history of node.js, how it is different and with the canonical createServer example one finds everywhere. Maybe this chapter, notwithstanding its brevity, was not really needed, since the audience for the book surely already know these things.

Then it follows with a "general considerations" chapter that is more general javascript than node actually, starting with ES5's strict mode and then including explanations of functions that everyone knows, such as the risks of using eval(), and also others some programmers might not be that aware of, such as seal(), freeze(), object property descriptors, and then moving on to static program analysis with JSLint / JSHint as another tool in your belt before really approaching node.js' security concerns proper. There are also general recommendations and what to look for in npm modules.

However more than security, we should be talking about the wider defensive coding / good practices spectrum, such as correctly handling exceptions, correctly using error callbacks, monitoring processes or node Domains (introduced in v. 0.8).
The next chapter moves into applications, briefly introducing express and connect and then a brief how-to on using the standard choice of passport.js, and also third party solutions, such as OpenID and OAuth, of course. What strategies are out there and how to plug the different middlewares is also taken care of. Logging is also discussed as part of the things the conscious developer should not neglect too, and general recommendations about it are given, recommendations that are good for any language or application platform, in any case, as the fact is that it is basically OWASP's guidelines that's being followed here.

The winston module for logging is the one chosen for specific node.js usage, here, as it seems to be the most favoured, although there are others, which is also why the author chose to tell the reader what to look for in modules to also make sure that these third-party pieces are also secure and well-managed.

The last two chapters are devoted to requests and to responses. The request chapter deals with request size limits, use of streams, and how they help protecting your app from attacks stemming from large payloads. Also how to monitor the event loop for health using node-toobusy module (sample taken from github). Then comes CSRF, input Validation (node-validator / express-validator).

Regarding the response layer, well-known stuff such as XSS, with several examples explaining what it is, and some simple scenarios, and DoS are explained. The XSS and related injections are probably the area that's explained more in-depth.

Then, the Helmet module is introduced as a way of mitigating risks with a series of specific http headers and mechanisms such as CSP (content security policy - check browser support here), HSTS, but which are embodied in specific headers anyway. Adequate examples of configurations for these headers are given.

With that this book comes to an end. All in all, it's not a bad book at all, but it is clearly oriented to the somewhat still novice node.js programmer, that might not be aware of all the good practices and security concerns alike that need to be taken care of in node.js / express apps. While I can't speak for anyone out there, I want to imagine that more experienced developers are familiar with the things discussed here, as they are mostly the most well-known tooling for these concerns. For those learning node or creating their first apps, I believe this is a valuable resource.

Patrick Kerwin is principal of Kerwin & Associates in San Diego, California, specializing in the development of individuals, leaders, teams, and organizations. A Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® Master Practitioner, Patrick has over 20 years experience working with corporate, education, and non-profit organizations to put the MBTI® instrument into practice for team-building, communication enhancement, change management, stress management, and individual development. He has worked with organizations including Microsoft, Google, Amgen, Heinz, Suncor Energy, Conoco-Phillips, the U.S. Navy, the Air Force Space Command, Monarch Healthcare, the UCSF Center for the Health Professions, Chelan Public Utility District, University of Notre Dame, Purdue University, and Thunderbird School of Global Management. Patrick is also one of a small cadre of faculty who conducts the intensive, four-day MBTI Certification Program in the U.S. and Canada. The power of instruction is in the stories told

You want your MBTI session to be memorable so learners will remember type behaviors (their own & others) through the tales told.
In this book Patrick Kerwin gives an array of stories that will stick with you. As an instructor, these stories helped me identify my own type tales I share in the classroom. Definitely worth the read.

A Must for Every Library

This book shares space as a superb addition to the many books about personality type I have collected through the years. Story after story illuminates the very nature of the psychological similarities and differences to be found within us. Not only will experienced practitioners of the application of type theory glean marvelously useful information from its contents, but anyone with an interest in understanding each other more fully will be well rewarded by reading this book. Patrick Kerwin is to be congratulated for offering such a simple and entertaining read, yet providing all of the elements for any reader to clearly understand the important concepts of personality type. I am already hoping there will be a second collection of "True Type Tales"!
